Fresno State in first place, Alex Lee atop individual leaderboard after day one of Geiberger Invitational

LA QUINTA, Calif. – Fresno State men's golf was locked in a tie for fourth after 18 holes at the Geiberger Invitational thanks in large part to Alex Lee's opening-round, 4-under-par 68. But as well as the Bulldogs fared in the first round, they hit another gear in the second. Lee carded his second consecutive 4-under-par 68 to pace the 'Dogs and was joined in red numbers by Michael Cliff, Lane Pulliam and Justin Avery.

After 36 holes, Lee holds a 4-stroke lead over three competitors, including teammate Michael Cliff, who is in a tie for second at 4-under-par. Pulliam and Avery round out the Bulldogs' scorers, sitting in ties for 18th and 24th place, respectively.

"The guys played really well today," head coach Chad Spencer said. "We played good, disciplined golf and made putts. Alex is on a great streak of play right now. He's playing with ultimate confidence. I really look forward to tomorrow and I know the guys will be as well."

ROUND 1
Alex Lee led the way in the opening round with a 4-under-par 68, which topped the leaderboard after 18 holes. The junior carded five birdies and an eagle and shot 4-under par on the front nine after posting an even-par 36 on the back.

Michael Cliff put together a solid first round. The freshman fired an even-par 72 as he shot even par on both nines and holed three birdies.

Justin Avery was third on the Bulldog leaderboard after 18 holes with a 3-over-par 75. Avery's lone major blemish in round one was a triple bogey on No. 18. The senior was even par on holes No. 1 to 17.

Lane Pulliam and Cody Riecks rounded out the Fresno State lineup with a pair of 4-over-par 76s. Pulliam holed a team-high 14 pars.

ROUND 2
Alex Lee replicated his first-round 68 with another 4-under-par 68 in the second. The junior shot 1-under-par on the back, 3-under-par on the front and compiled five birdies to go along with an eagle on the par-5 11th.

Michael Cliff matched Lee's 4-under-par 68 with one of his own, which was the freshman's first round in the 60s this season. Cliff fired a 4-under-par 32 on the back and an even-par 36 on the front. His stellar back nine included a stretch of four consecutive birdies from holes No. 12 to 15.

Lane Pulliam and Justin Avery stepped up in a big way during round two to give the 'Dogs a couple more low scorers to round out their Top 4. Pulliam was right behind Lee and Cliff with a 3-under-par 69, his second round in the 60s this season, while Avery carded a 1-under-par 71.

Cody Riecks improved upon his opening-round 76 with a 2-over-par 74 in the second round. Riecks would have joined his teammates in red numbers if it hadn't been for a quadruple bogey on No. 18. The redshirt junior was 2-under-par on holes No. 1 to 17.

FINAL ROUND
Tuesday's final round at the PGA West Nicklaus Tournament Course will begin at 7:30 a.m. PT, with players teeing off holes No. 1 and No. 10. The Bulldogs will enter the third round with a 2-stroke lead over host Loyola Marymount. No. 49 Santa Clara and No. 38 BYU are the only other teams under par.
