The Diamond 'Dogs held off a late ninth-inning rally by Hawai'i to defeat the Rainbow Warriors, 3-1 on Mother's Day Sunday afternoon at Bob Bennett Stadium.
FRESNO, Calif. - Holding a 3-0 lead and needing only three outs for its third shutout the season, the Diamond 'Dogs held off a late Hawai'i rally for a 3-1 win over the Rainbow Warriors on Mother's Day afternoon at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Fresno State (28-23), who had only allowed two hits and one walk through the first eight innings of the game, held off a fierce rally attempt by Hawai'i (25-20) as the Rainbow Warriors used a pair of hits and a walk to score one run before loading the bases with two outs for catcher Chayce Ka'aua.
With Bulldog relief pitcher Ryan Jensen in the game, the sophomore right-hander was able strike out Ka'aua to strand the bases full of Rainbow Warriors and send the 'Dogs home with a victory in the series finale.
Absolutely sensational on the mound all game, Bulldog freshman southpaw Nikoh Mitchell threw a season-high seven innings limiting Hawai'i to two hits, one single, one walk while striking out a season-best seven batters to pick up his fourth win of the season. Sophomore Davis Moore threw a perfect eighth inning striking out one while Jensen recorded his second save of the season.
Offensively, the Bulldogs finished with their third straight 10-hit performance of the series as they were led by a three-hit performance from junior center fielder Zach Ashford who hit his 18th double (watch) of the season and scored a run.
Junior second baseman Jeremiah Burks had his second straight standout game from the plate smacking a pair of doubles, drew a walk, scored two runs and drove in an RBI. JT Arruda and Nolan Dempsey each had two hits apiece as Arruda added a double and drove in two of the 'Dogs three runs.
How It Happened
The 'Dogs got the scoring started early in the bottom of the first with an RBI double to right-center by Burks (watch) which was followed two batters later with a two-out single through the right side by Arruda (watch) that drove home Burks to give the 'Dogs a quick 2-0 lead.
A one-out double down the left field line by Arruda (watch) in the bottom of the third, his 10th of the season, again drove in Burks to push the 'Dogs lead to 3-0 after three innings. Threatening to add to the lead, the Bulldogs left the bases juiced in the fourth as Mitchell retired 11 straight 'Bows from the third to the sixth innings.
After getting out of a two runners on base and two-out jam in the sixth with his sixth strikeout of the game, the crafty lefty retired the side again in order in the seventh closing out his stint with his seventh strikeout (watch).
Dempsey led off the bottom of the eighth with a walk, but was erased on a double play as the game went to the ninth with the shutout in tact. A single and walk followed by a groundout put two Rainbow Warriors in scoring position with two outs for third baseman Ethan Lopez who came through with a single through the right side to break up the shutout.Â
Lopez then advanced to second on a wild pitch and a walk to first baseman Eric Ramirez loaded the bases, but the 'Dogs were able to hold on for the win.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On today's game....
"Right when we needed it most, we came through with a great pitching performance. You saw Nikoh go out there and attack the mitt and I can't wait to get to the ballpark every time he gets to pitch. He is really good when he is on and today he was great."
On Zach Ashford's play in center field....
"Another outstanding game again for him as he has been all season and he is rock solid on the routine play. He has been fantastic all season long."Â
On moving on to Thursday's series-opener against UNLV....
"Just lock in and get ready to go and come ready to play."
