FRESNO, Calif. - Helping the Diamond 'Dogs keep their Mountain West Tournament hopes alive, junior right-hander Edgar Gonzalez was absolutely sensational on Thursday night tossing his third career complete game in a 6-1 victory over UNLV at Bob Bennett Stadium.
In likely his final home outing as a Bulldog, the Newark, Calif., native tossed 112 pitches, 72 for strikes, while limiting UNLV to four hits, all singles, one earned run, three walks and added seven strikeouts. Gonzalez retired 16 of the final 18 batters he faced allowing only two walks in that stretch.
Picking up his eighth win of the season and his second complete game of 2018, Gonzalez moves to 8-2 on the season with a 2.84 ERA and now has 110 strikeouts in 95.0 innings of work.
Jumping out to a 5-0 lead after three innings, Fresno State (29-23, 12-16 MW) notched six of its eight hits in the early going as senior shortstop Korby Batesole was outstanding from the plate in the game going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, matched his career-high with three runs scored and added two RBIs.
Five other Bulldogs had base hits as freshman catcher Zach Presno hit his team-leading eighth home run of the season and redshirt freshman third baseman JT Arruda added his third triple of the season and two RBIs.
How It Happened
The 'Dogs struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning as leadoff batter Zach Ashford got the offense started with a single back up the middle which was followed by a double down the left field line by Batesole for the game's first run. Arruda added a sacrifice fly to left field (watch) for one his two RBIs in the contest scoring Batesole for an early 2-0 lead.
Presno continued the 'Dogs offense in the second inning with a two-out home run to left field (watch) for a 3-0 lead before two more runs in the third inning increased the Bulldogs lead to 5-0. Arruda smacked a two-out triple down the right field line (watch) to drive in Batesole and Nolan Dempsey added an infield single (watch) to score Arruda.
UNLV (32-21, 13-15 MW) scored its lone run of the game in the top of the fourth on a wild pitch that brought home center fielder Kyle Isbel from third and the Rebels threatened for more runs, but Gonzalez was able to strand two runners in scoring position with two straight outs getting a strikeout and groundout.
Batesole led off the bottom of the fifth with his second home run of the season (watch) smashing the ball to right field to extend the 'Dogs lead to 6-1 as that was the final score of the game.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On Edgar Gonzalez's performance......
"That was neat and clean on the mound tonight by Edgar. We had him at about 12 pitches a inning and that is about as neat and clean as you can get. We turned a couple nice double plays and had a nice defensive plays by Arruda and Goldy."
On moving ahead to Friday night's game.....
"Be ahead in the ninth, 18th and 27th innings this weekend. Nothing else really matters. You can win, sloppy, dirty, doesn't matter, just want to be ahead at the end of the game this time of the year."
