The Diamond 'Dogs saw their Mountain West Tournament hopes dashed on Friday night falling 7-3 to UNLV at Bob Bennett Stadium.
FRESNO, Calif. - Needing two wins to keep their Mountain West Tournament hopes alive, the Diamond 'Dogs were unable to build off an early 1-0 lead over UNLV on Friday night falling 7-3 to the Rebels at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Fresno State (29-24, 12-17 MW), who was officially eliminated from MW Tournament contention with the loss, jumped out to an early one-run lead and smacked 10 hits in the contest, but it wasn't enough as UNLV (33-21, 14-15 MW) was too much for the 'Dogs to overcome.
Leading the way from the plate on the night were four Bulldogs with two hits apiece as junior outfielder Zach Ashford, senior shortstop Korby Batesole, redshirt senior first baseman Torin Goldstein and freshman designated hitter Emilio Nogales combined for eight hits. Batesole tallied his ninth double of the season and added an RBI while Goldstein chipped in his seventh two-bag base hit of the season. Nogales added two RBI singles and Ashford scored a run.
On the mound, freshman southpaw Nikoh Mitchell got his seventh start of the season tossing a season-high 5.1 innings limiting the Rebels to five hits, three earned runs, one walk and five strikeouts, but took his third loss of the season. Sophomore Ryan Jensen tossed the final 3.2 innings allowing five hits, four runs, three earned, one walk and added four strikeouts.
How It Happened
The 'Dogs jumped on Rebel starting pitcher Trevor Horn, the reigning Mountain West Pitcher of the Week, for a run in the bottom of the second on a single to left-center by Nogales (watch) scoring Goldstein from second base to take an early 1-0 lead.
The Rebels answered back in the top of the third with a pair of runs scoring one run on a sacrifice fly to center field by shortstop Bryson Stott and took a 2-1 lead two batters later with a single to center field by center fielder Kyle Isbel.
The Bulldogs tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth on another RBI base hit by Nogales, his 12th RBI of the season, this one back up the middle driving in JT Arruda from second base.
After Mitchell only faced three Rebels in the fifth, UNLV was able to turn the game in the top of the sixth scoring two runs as they never relinquished the lead. One run scored off Mitchell on a fielder's choice and the eventual game-winning run came around to score after Jensen replaced Mitchell and issued a walk to second baseman Nick Rodriguez as the Rebel moved to second on the fielder's choice and moved to third on a Bulldog throwing error before coming around to score on an RBI groundout by right fielder Matt Smith.
With the 'Dogs trailing 4-2, a double by Batesole in the bottom of the seventh down the right field line (watch) drove in Ashford from first base to cut the Rebels lead to one, but that would be as close as they would get as UNLV added three runs in the top of the eighth to win by a final score of 7-3.
