Rallying back from a 8-4 deficit entering the bottom of the eighth inning, the Diamond 'Dogs scored five runs over the final two innings to defeat UNLV, 9-8 on a walk-off walk to win on Senior Day at Bob Bennett Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Securing the 'Dogs fourth-straight 30-win season and 53rd overall in program history with the victory over the Rebels, a two-out walk by Bulldog freshman right fielder Nate Thimjon with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth brought home JT Arruda for the Bulldogs' second walk-off win of the season.
Finishing the season with 31 double-digit hitting performances, the 'Dogs finished with 14 hits on the afternoon as eight of the Bulldogs who got an at-bat finished with at least one hit. Freshman designated hitter Emilio Nogales led the way with a three-hit performance, all singles, adding two RBIs and two runs scored.
Four other 'Dogs had two hits apiece as the Bulldogs' pair of fifth-year seniors, Torin Goldstein and Nick Warren, each finished with two hits apiece. Goldstein hit his eighth double of the season, scored and drove in a run while Warren hit his third double of the season and scored a run. Junior Jeremiah Burks hit his team-leading ninth home run of the season while Arruda added a pair of hits, one RBI and scored two runs.
On the mound, Fresno State (30-24, 13-17 MW) used six pitchers in the contest as redshirt junior McCarthy Tatum made his starting pitching debut as a Bulldog tossing two innings allowing one hit, a solo home run, and added a walk and strikeout.
Freshman southpaw Jaime Arias came in to work a team-high 3.2 innings while Oscar Carvajal, senior JJ Santa Cruz , Jamison Hill and Tiegen Jones rounded out the Bulldog hurlers. Jones pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his first career win.
How It Happened
The game was slow in the early going as the teams traded one run apiece through four innings as Burks' solo home run in the fourth inning (watch) got the 'Dogs on the board.
UNLV (33-22, 14-16 MW) smacked a pair of solo home runs to lead off the top of the fifth to take a 3-1 lead, but that lead was short-lived as the Bulldogs responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame scoring on a double to right field by Warren (watch) which was followed up three batters later by senior shortstop Korby Batesole's single back up the middle (watch) that drove in Warren to tie the game at 3-3.
The Rebels again responded with two runs in the top of the sixth to take a 5-3 lead, but the 'Dogs cut the deficit in half with a run on an RBI single to left-center by Nogales (watch).
UNLV added a run in the top of the seventh taking advantage of a Bulldog error to take a 6-4 lead and added two more runs in the top of the eighth scoring one run apiece on doubles by catcher Vince Taormina and third baseman Dillon Johnson to take a 8-4 advantage.
Down to their final six outs of the season, the 'Dogs continued to fight as they have all season again cutting the deficit in half scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth. Nogales again came through with a one-out RBI single down the left field line (watch) to score Goldstein who reached on a fielding error by UNLV. After Miles Tomczak reached base on a fielder's choice, Warren drew a walk to load the bases for Thimjon who hit an infield single to the shortstop (watch) driving in Nogales from third.
After Jones' three-up, three-down top of the ninth, the 'Dogs kept the offense going in the bottom of the ninth as Burks scored on a one-out double by Goldstein to right-center (watch) cutting the game to 8-7 before Arruda tied the game at 8-8 with a single back up the middle (watch) to score pinch-runner Carter Bins from third base.
Pinch-hitter Nolan Dempsey entered the game to replace Nogales and laid down a bunt single down the third base line to put runners at first and second with one out. After Tomczak flied out to deep left field for the second out, Warren reached base on a fielding error by the Rebel shortstop loading the bases for Thimjon who drew only his seventh walk of the season to drive in the game-winning run.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On today's Senior Day walk-off victory....
"Good for the seniors and they all contributed and played an importance piece to the win. That is what you want on Senior Day and you want them all to get in there and do their piece and they did that today!"
On all of the seniors making contributions today....
"All of them did what they had to do. Nick had a couple hits, Goldy had two hits and an RBI and JJ came in and got a big leadoff batter out. You can also add McCarthy Tatum in there as well and he gave us everything he had. It was great for them to go out with a win and it is a great memory for them."
On McCarthy Tatum.....
"You have to love his attitude and his willingness to do anything for the team to win."
On the Red Wave.....
"They are terrific and I really love that they are going to show up no matter what and they have our back. That is such a great feeling knowing they are going to be right there with us for the next few years that have a chance to be very special."
