Junior heads to NCAA championships for second time in as many years.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – For the second straight year, Fresno State's Vanja Spaic punched her ticket to the NCAA Track and Field Championships in the javelin, this time doing so at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium on Thursday afternoon. Sitting in 12th, the final qualifying spot, the junior launched an attempt that landed 50.84m/166'-9" to move her up to eighth and seal her spot at nationals in Eugene, Oregon.
Spaic, the Fresno State record holder in the javelin, entered the regional ranking 11th in the field. After fouling on her first attempt, the Bulldog reeled off a second attempt that put her into the top 12. Passed multiple times, she was pushed into 12th by the time her third attempt rolled around. With throwers behind her in the order who had the ability to leap into qualifying position, the 2017 second team All-American produced a final attempt that clinched her spot.
Fresno State closed day one with Varvara Klyuchnikova in the high jump. Clean through her first two heights, the junior missed on her first attempt at 1.75m/5'-8.75" but cleared it on her second. Missing on her three attempts at 1.80m/5'-10.75", Klyuchnikova sat in fourth place in flight one. She would finish 16th overall, narrowly missing a spot in Eugene in her first season with the Bulldogs.
Tomorrow will see Kayla Hopkins and Yazmin Torres in the discus starting at 4:30 p.m. Torres will be first up in flight one while Hopkins will be in flight three. Freshman Morgan Lewis will also hit the track in the 100-meter hurdles at 5 p.m.
