Freshman will seek a trip to the NCAA Championships at 7:20 p.m. PT on Saturday.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Running next to the second-fastest athlete in the field entering this week's NCAA West Preliminary Round, Morgan Lewis did what she needed to do to ensure a spot in Saturday's quarterfinals of the 100-meter hurdles—finish in the top three. Clocking a time of 13.55 at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium, the Fresno State freshman placed second in her heat to move one step closer to earning a trip to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Â
Entering heat one with the third-fastest time of the nine athletes she was running against, Lewis finished more than three-tenths off of her personal best, but it was just enough as the top-three finish gave her an automatic spot in tomorrow's quarterfinals. She would finish 18th overall among the 48 athletes who competed on Friday.
Â
The Atlanta, Georgia native will race tomorrow at 7:20 p.m. PT as she looks book her trip to Hayward Field. Qualification consists of three heats with the top three finishers n each heat, plus the next three best overall times, advancing to Eugene.
Â
During the evening, seniors Kayla Hopkins and Yazmin Torres' seasons came to close in the discus. Sitting in qualifying position through the first of three seeded flights with a mark of 50.29m/165'-0", Torres was bypassed as the event wore on, finishing 29th overall. In the third flight, Hopkins was unable to land a throw that would put in her qualifying position, finishing with a top mark of 50.98m/167'-3".
Â
Along with Lewis seeking advancement to the championships tomorrow, Aisiah Tuiasosopo will also be action on the final day of the West regional. The senior's day will begin at noon in the hammer throw.
