McMaryion & Allison named to Maxwell & Bednarik Award Watch Lists

The Maxwell Club has come out with the preseason watch lists for the 2018 Maxwell and Chuck Bednarik Awards as a pair of Bulldogs in quarterback Marcus McMaryion and linebacker Jeff Allison were included on the respective lists.
PHILADELPHIA – College football season is right around the corner and The Maxwell Club has come out with the preseason watch lists for the 2018 Maxwell and Chuck Bednarik Awards as a pair of Bulldogs in quarterback Marcus McMaryion and linebacker Jeff Allison were included on the respective lists.
McMaryion is one of 85 players in the country that was named to the watch list for the 82nd annual Maxwell Award, which is given to College Football's Player of the Year and is named in honor of Robert T. "Tiny" Maxwell for his contributions as a player, sportswriter and official.
Allison is one of 85 players named to the watch list for the 24th annual Chuck Bednarik Award that is presented to the College Defensive Player of the Year and is named after the former Penn & Philadelphia Eagle standout who is a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame and NFL Hall of Fame.
An All-Mountain West honorable mention selection last season and a preseason MW second-team pick by Phil Steele, McMaryion returns for his second season as a Bulldog leading the 'Dogs high-powered offense.
The Dinuba native, who started his career at Oregon State before joining the Bulldogs as a graduate transfer last August, passed for 2,726 yards and 14 touchdowns through the air in his first season as a 'Dog while rushing for 302 yards and four touchdowns.
Helping Fresno State claim its first bowl victory since 2007, McMaryion threw for a season-high 342 yards against Houston in the Hawai'i Bowl completing 33 of 48 passes while rushing for 50 yards and two touchdowns.
Leading Fresno State to a 9-2 record in his 11 starts, McMaryion helped the Bulldogs become only the second team ever in the Football Bowl Subdivision to record double-digit wins a season after suffering double-digit losses.
McMaryion helped the Bulldogs capture the West Division crown of the Mountain West and a spot in the Mountain West championship game at Boise State with a 28-17 victory over the Broncos at home on Senior Day passing for 332 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Fresno State's lone First-Team All-Mountain West selection last season, Allison led the 'Dogs and finished 15th in the nation with 126 tackles while finishing tied for seventh in the country with 79 solo tackles.
The Miami native led the team and ranked 31st in the nation in tackles per game with 9.0 while tallying 5.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, two forced fumbles and three pass breakups.
Allison recorded six double-digit tackle games going for a season-best 14 on two occasions at Alabama and at home against BYU.
He earned a pair of Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week honors after wins at San Diego State and at home against BYU finishing with 10 tackles, one for tackle for loss and a forced fumble against the Aztecs while tallying 14 tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery against the Cougars.
McMaryion is Fresno State's first Maxwell Award Watch List nominee since Derek Carr in 2013 and is one of five student-athletes from the Mountain West as he is joined by fellow quarterbacks Brett Rypien (Boise State), Ty Gangi (Nevada) & Armani Rogers (UNLV) along with San Diego State running back Juwan Washington.
Allison is Fresno State's first Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List nominee since Derron Smith in 2014 and is joined by fellow Mountain West defenders Tyler Horton (Boise State), Malik Reed (Nevada), Carl Granderson (Wyoming) and Andrew Wingard (Wyoming).
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award and Chuck Bednarik will be announced on October 29 with the three finalists named on November 19 and the winner will be named on December 6 at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show.
The Maxwell and Chuck Bednarik Awards are members of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football.
