'Dogs kickoff the 2018 season in the Montana Cup

MISSOULA, Mont. – The Fresno State women's soccer team will open the 2018 regular season in the Montana Cup, Aug. 17-19. The Bulldogs will face the host Montana on Friday, Aug. 17 at 4:30 p.m. PT and Drake on Sunday, Aug. 19 at 9 a.m. PT.

"We are ready to take our first major road trip to kickoff the 2018 campaign," said head coach Brian Zwaschka. "Our opponents have done very well in recent seasons in their respective conferences and I'm sure they will be as eager to pit themselves against us in countable games as we are. Our additional objective is to season ourselves to the extensive travel required as well as it being a final team unifying experience before our daily schedule changes due to classes starting next week. Everyone is looking forward to the chance to perform and move beyond the preseason preparation period."
A LOOK AT THE FIELD
MONTANA
Montana is led by first-year head coach Chris Citowicki. The Grizzilies, who were picked to finish third in the Big West preseason coaches' poll, return 11 letterwinners and eight starters, including All-Big Sky Conference First-Team selection and 2017 Big Sky Defensive Player of the Year Taryn Miller. The Grizzilies also return their 2017 leading scorer and Big Sky All-Tournament Team selection Alexa Coyle. Coyle finished the 2017 season with four goals, two assists, 10 points and 34 shots.
Last Season
The Grizzilies finished the 2017 season with an overall 10-7-4 (5-2-3 Big Sky) record. They outscored their opponents 21-16, outshot their opponents 301-220 and averaged 1.00 goals per game. Â
Last Meeting
The last time the two squads met, Fresno State defeated Montana 2-1 on Sept. 18, 2016 in Fresno, Calif. This will be the first time the two teams will play in Missoula, Mont.
The Bulldogs own the all-time record, 1-0.
DRAKE
Drake is led by ten-year head coach Lindsey Horner. Drake, which was picked fourth in the 2018 MVC preseason coaches' poll, returns 18 letterwinners and five starters from last season's team that won the 2017 MVC regular season championship. The Bulldogs return Alyssa Brand, a three-time All-MVC selection and Hannah Bormann, the 2017 MVC Freshman of the Year. Both were named to the preseason all-conference team.
Last Season
Drake finished the 2017 season with an overall 13-4-2 (6-0-1 MVC) record. The Bulldogs earned their sixth MVC regular season championship after going undefeated in conference play. Drake outscored its opponents 31-22, outshot its opponents 149-125 and recorded 1.63 goals per game.
Last Meeting
The last time the two teams met, Drake defeated Fresno State 2-1 on Aug. 31, 2014 in Des Moines, Iowa.
Drake owns the all-time record 1-0.
QUICK LOOK AT THE 'DOGS
The Bulldogs are led by ninth-year head coach Brian Zwaschka. Fresno State was picked to finish sixth in the 2018 Mountain West preseason coaches' poll.
The Bulldogs outscored their opponents 32-19 and outshot their opponents 230-199.
Fresno State returns 11 letterwinners and four starters, including 2015 All-MW Second Team honoree Maria Gomez. Nicole Theroux will also return to the goal for Fresno State. Last season, Theroux started all 20 games as the Bulldogs' goalkeeper, grabbed 70 saves and recorded a 0.83 goals against average. The Bulldogs restocked their roster for the upcoming season with eight newcomers, six freshman and two transfers.

Fresno State finished with a 10-6-4 (5-4-2 MW) record. The Bulldogs had seven home wins in front of the Red Wave this last season, the most since 2007 (7) and six losses for the Bulldogs were the fewest since 2011. Fresno State finished within the top half of the conference which ensured their spot in the 2017 Mountain West Championship Tournament, marking the first championship appearance since 2013, and increased its win total for the fourth consecutive season. Fresno State fell in an exhilarating quarterfinal match of the 2017 Mountain West Women's Soccer Tournament to New Mexico in sudden death penalty kicks.
