'Dogs fall to Anteaters, 2-1

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's soccer team fell in a close match to UC Irvine 2-1, Friday night. The Bulldogs were led by Chloe Chedester, who scored her first collegiate goal.
"We would have liked to finish nonconference play with a win to have some confidence going into conference, but we were really dangerous on the attack today," said head coach Brian Zwashka. "We are creating chances, we just need to execute better in the box."
Fresno State falls to 1-6-1 on the season.
FIRST HALF
Tori Nicolo, Olivia Muhrbeck, Megan Amick, Alyssa Nishikawa, Ele Avery, Shantay Tamez, Kasidee Wiley, Robyn McCarthy, Emma Chivers and Danielle Pacheco started the game for the 'Dogs, with Nicole Theroux in the box.
Fresno State started the game with back-to-back shots. Avery sent a shot off the crossbar in the fifth minute and Wiley was there for the rebound to take another shot, the Anteater goalie grabbed the save.
UCI responded with two shots of its own. The Anteaters took a shot in the in the seventh minute, it was blocked by Fresno State's defense. UCI recovered the ball and took a shot on goal, but Theroux was there for the save.
Both teams stayed on the attack through the first half. After 45 minutes, the score was tied 0-0. UCI owned the advantage in shots (12-4) and corners (1-0). Fresno State recorded more saves (4-1).
SECOND HALF
The Anteaters opened the second half with a strong offensive push, recording eight consecutive shots. UCI scored the first goal of the game in the 66th minute, capitalizing on a blocked shot in the box.
UCI quickly extended its lead in the 74th minute, scored off a throw in, to take a 2-0 lead.
On an offensive break, Megan Pust drove the ball down field and passed ahead to Chedester. Chedester beat the Anteater's defenders to put the 'Dogs on the board in the 78th minute.
Despite Fresno State's tenacity to even the score, UCI was able to maintain possession for a significant amount of the last 12 minutes of the match to run out the clock.
NOTABLE STATS
UCI recorded more shots (24-5) and corners (5-0). Fresno State had more saves, 6-1.
