Marcus McMaryion & Mykal Walker become the first Bulldog duo since 2012 to win the MW Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week in the same week.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Fresno State senior quarterback Marcus McMaryion and redshirt junior defensive end Mykal Walker were named the Mountain West Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively on Monday morning, as announced by the conference office.
It is McMaryion's second weekly Mountain West honor this season, and third of his career, after he picked up the award two weeks ago with a five touchdown-performance at UCLA. Walker gives the 'Dogs their first MW defensive player of the week honoree this season and it is the first of his career.
In total, the Bulldogs have now been honored four times by the conference after junior defensive back Jaron Bryant earned Special Teams Player of the Week after the season-opener against Idaho.
McMaryion passed for a career-high 368 yards on Saturday night in the 'Dogs 49-27 win over Toledo completing a career-best 77.4 percent of his passes connecting on 24-of-31 passes through the air.
He became the first Bulldog quarterback since Derek Carr in 2013 to account for five total touchdowns in back-back games as McMaryion tied his career high with four touchdown passes and added one rushing touchdown in the victory.
His 368 passing yards were the most by a Fresno State quarterback since Carr passed for 404 yards on Dec. 7, 2013 against Utah State in the Mountain West championship game. The Dinuba native added 15 yards on the ground on four carries and scored his fifth rushing touchdown of the season in the third quarter.
On the defensive side of the ball, Walker was everywhere against the Toledo offense finishing with four tackles, two solo, a team-high 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack, forced a fumble and made a pass breakup.
In addition, Walker nabbed his first career interception returning it 38 yards for a touchdown to become the first Bulldog defensive lineman since Tristan Okpalaugo in 2012 at Tulsa to return an interception for score.
The Vacaville, Calif. native's interception was the second time this season a Bulldog defender has ran it back for a touchdown after Anthoula Kelly returned an interception for a touchdown in the season-opening win over Idaho.
Walker has made at least four tackles in all four games this season and recorded his second sack and second forced fumble of the season against the Rockets. His 2.5 TFL's are the second-most by a Bulldog in a game in 2018Â and he now has a team-high five TFL's on the season.
The Bulldog defense as a whole has five forced fumbles, eight sacks and eight interceptions in 2018. Fresno State (3-1) is back in action on Saturday night when they open up Mountain West play at Nevada (3-2, 1-0 MW) at 7:30 p.m. PT on ESPNU.
It is the fourth time since the 'Dogs have moved to the Mountain West, and first time since 2012, that they have won the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week in the same week as they did it three times in 2012.
