'Dogs fight adversity in Nike Cal Invite

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Fresno State women's tennis team was back in action over the weekend as freshman Ella Husrefovic and sophomore Alessia Dario competed in the Nike Cal Invitational at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts in Berkeley, Calif. The 'Dogs picked up two wins, but ultimately had their tournament run cut short due to injury.

Freshman Ella Husrefovic, listed as the No. 27 singles seed in the blue singles bracket of the tournament, picked up her first collegiate singles win in her debut appearance by taking down BYU's No. 7 seed Anastasia Abramyan 6-4, 6-2. Despite the hot start, the Queensland, Australia, native's run was derailed by an injury, forcing her to retire down 6-4 to Santa Barbara's No. 25 seed Dominika Paterova.

Sophomore Alessia Dario saw her second piece of action on the season over the weekend as a No. 4 seed, but fell 6-1, 6-1 to San Francisco's No. 3 seed, Rita Colyer, in the gold singles bracket. The Francenigo, Italy, native picked up a walkover win over the No. 1 seed of the tournament, Santa Barbara's Stephanie Yamada, in the gold singles consolation bracket, but was next defeated 6-2, 6-3 by Sacramento State's No. 6 seed, Shamika Dhar.

In doubles, Dario and Husrefovic teamed up as the No. 4 seed to compete in the gold doubles bracket, but were taken down by the No. 3-seeded tandem of Aubane Ville and Jordan Harris of Saint Mary's (Calif.) 8-2. Nevada's No. 2-seeded pair of Kristin Lagoda and Melissa Hutchet then walked over the Fresno State duo in the gold doubles consolation bracket as Husrefovic was no longer able to compete.

Fresno State's next action will be participating in the St. Mary's Invitational at the Tim Korth Tennis Courts in Moraga, Calif., from Oct. 5-7. Admission is free and information on how to follow the action will be provided on a later date.
