FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State football program saw a pair of Bulldogs drafted in the inaugural XFL Draft earlier this week. The XFL announced its league in January 2018 and is set to kick off in 2020.
Â
The draft was made up of five phases and took place, Oct. 15-16.
Â
1.            Skill Players (QB, RB, WR, TE)
2.            Offensive Line (OT, OG, OC)
3.            Defensive Front Seven (DL, LB)
4.            Defensive Backfield (CB, NB, SS, FS)
5.            Open Draft (all remaining players)
Â
The new league consists of eight teams with 40-man active rosters and a 10-week regular season schedule. The postseason will be two semifinal playoff games followed by a championship game.
Â
Derron Smith (2010-14)
Smith was selected as the first overall pick in the defensive backfield phase by the Dallas Renegades on Wednesday.
Â
In his time as a Bulldog, Smith was a three-time first team All-Mountain West selection. He had 15 career interceptions, enough for second in the FBS and be the most for a Bulldog since 1987. Smith is just one of six Bulldogs to ever record over 300 career tackles.
Â
Following his time at Fresno State, Smith was drafted in the sixth round by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2015. In the NFL, he spent time with the Bengals, Cleveland Browns and Minnesota Vikings. Smith also had a successful stint in the Alliance of American Football (AAF) for the San Antonio Commanders in 2018.
Â
Smith signed with the Minnesota Vikings in April 2019 after the AAF disbanded. He was released by the Vikings during the final roster cuts on Aug. 30, 2019.
Â
Micah St. Andrew (2014-18)
St. Andrew was selected in the open draft phase by the Los Angeles Wildcats on Wednesday.
Â
An undrafted free agent in 2019, St. Andrew signed with the Detroit Lions shortly after the NFL Draft and made a positive impression in rookie mini-camp to earn a roster spot for training camp. He played in four preseason games for the Lions before he was released.
Â
St. Andrew wrapped up his Bulldog career in 2018 earning All-Mountain West Second-Team honors starting all 14 games while making 49 career starts.
