No. 9 Bulldogs upset No. 3 Oklahoma State

FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 9 Fresno State equestrian team defeated No. 3 Oklahoma State, 14-5, at the Student Horse Center on Friday afternoon. The 'Dogs took down the Cowgirls for the first time in 11 years. Sophomore Cecily Hayes was named the Fences MOP in her third win of the season.

"This has proved to us once again that we are where we are supposed to be," said head coach Eric Hubbard. "We are proving to ourselves that we can overcome any team out there. We are really excited to keep the pedal down as we continue through the season."

The morning began with the Fences and Horsemanship. Oklahoma State opened the first half of each competition with impressive rides, but Fresno State wasn't discouraged as it went on to take a 8-2 lead into the half.

The Bulldogs won the Fences, 4-1. OSU's Abigail Brayman opened the event with a 81, but senior Erica Rosinski answered with an 83 for her highest score of the season. Sophomore Cecily Hayes outscored her opponent, 85-79, for her second consecutive 80+ score ride in the Fences. Freshman Ana Bertozzi outrode Katie Schell, 68-63. Sophomore Hana Bieling rounded out the scoring for the 'Dogs with a 79 to Sydnie Ziegler's 66 for the largest margin of victory for the Bulldogs.

While the Fences was finishing up, the Horsemanship was beginning its second half. Like the Fences, Oklahoma State had strong opening rounds with all scores being a 71 or higher. After dropping the first draw, the Bulldogs earned the final three points to take a 4-1 lead in the event.

Sophomore Hannah Buijs edged Emma Verplank, 69-68.5. Senior Nicole Campbell earned her point with a 76 to Harley Huff's 71. Sophomore Brooklyn Moch rode for a 73.5 to Cassidy Watters' 63.5 for the second Bulldog point of the event. Freshman Hannah Way scored a 74 to JoJo Roberson's 73.5 to secure the final point of the event.

Fresno State went into the half with a six point lead, 8-2.

The Bulldogs kept the momentum going in the second half, outscoring Oklahoma State 6-3. The Bulldogs defeated the Cowgirls 3-2 for their fourth win in the Flat event this season.

Hayes earned her Flat point with a 80 to Schell's 75. Rosinski followed with a 79-77 win against Katie Pelzel. Hayes and Rosinski were both undefeated on the day. Freshman Annastasia Anstead rounded out scoring for the Bulldogs with a 79-75 win against Hannah Coleman.

In the Reining, Fresno State outscored Oklahoma State 3-1. Senior Shea Gilson tied in her ride with a 67. Sophomore Lexee Padrick came out and rode her highest Reining score of the season, a 70.5 to Hannah Lovrien's 69.5. Senior Paige Barton scored a 70.5 to Hannah Mitchell's 69.5 and freshman Bailey Alexander earned a point with a 70 to OSU's 0.

Fresno State capped its top five victory with an official ribbon cutting of its new Equestrian Center. The Bulldogs were surrounded by coaches, President Joseph I. Castro, Director of Athletics Terry Tumey, Director for Development Tim Collins, and friends and family for the grand opening.

The Bulldogs are back at the Student Horse Center on Nov. 8-9 against No. 8 Baylor and No. 2 Georgia.
