FRESNO, Calif. - On a special day for the Fresno State volleyball program that saw Bulldog legend Ruth Lawanson's No. 15 jersey unveiled in the rafters of the Save Mart Center, the Bulldogs fell in four sets to Wyoming.
Fresno State (12-14, 5-9 MW), who matched a program-record 17 service aces in the match, fell 22-25, 21-25, 25-16, 19-25. The 'Dogs reached a program-record 17 service aces in a match for the first time since 1990 against CSU Bakersfield.
The Bulldogs were led by the return of junior outside hitter Desiree Sukhov to the lineup after she missed the last five matches. Sukhov made her presence felt with a team-leading 15 kills while adding six digs, two service aces and a block assist.
Freshman outside hitter Amaria Kelley added 11 kills for her sixth double-figure kill contest of the season. Leading the way from the service line was junior outside hitter Amilya Thompson with five service aces while setter Madelyn Halteman added four and middle blocker Grace Doyle tallied three.
Halteman tacked on 32 assists while junior libero Reagan Leonard added a team-high 19 digs.
How It Happened
Wyoming (17-8, 12-2 MW) jumped out to a 15-9 lead in the first set before the 'Dogs were able to trim it to one at 20-19 after an ace by junior libero Jocelyn Rodriguez. A kill by Sukhov kept the Bulldogs only down a point at 21-20, but a Cowgirl kill and a Bulldog attack error pushed Wyoming's lead to three as they took the opening set, 25-22.
The 'Dogs continued to battle in the second set taking a 6-3 lead (watch) after a kill by junior outside hitter Savanah Smith. Tied up at 16 apiece, the 'Dogs went on a 3-0 run, which included a Thompson ace (watch), for a 19-16 lead, but a 9-2 run for the Cowgirls closed out the second set for a 25-21 win for Wyoming.
Facing a 2-0 deficit, the 'Dogs rallied in the third set for a commanding 25-16 win. Leading 15-13 at the media timeout, the 'Dogs went on a 5-2 run to take a 20-15 lead after a kill by Doyle (watch). Out of a timeout, Wyoming would get one final point before the final five points of the set went to the 'Dogs as another Thompson ace sealed the set win (watch).
Looking to force a decisive fifth set, the Bulldogs were unable to do so as Wyoming clinched the win with a 25-19 set four win. A kill by Sukhov cut Wyoming's lead to one at 14-13 (watch), but a 7-3 run by the Cowgirls' gave them some breathing room at 21-16. Back-to-back kills by Lauren Sabbatini and Sukhov (watch) cut the Wyoming lead to three, but that would be as close as they would get falling by six.
Notes
The Bulldogs are back in action on Tuesday traveling to San Diego State (12-12, 5-8 MW) before returning home to face Air Force (8-18, 5-9 MW) next Saturday for Senior Day at 1 p.m. PT at the Save Mart Center.
