Mitchell named to NCBWA Stopper of the Year Preseason Watch List

Fresno State sophomore left-handed pitcher Nikoh Mitchell was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Preseason Watch List, the association announced on Monday.
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Fresno State sophomore left-handed pitcher Nikoh Mitchell was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Preseason Watch List, the association announced on Monday.
A total of seventy-five players nationally have been named to the initial Watch List for the 15th annual NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I Baseball. Mitchell is one of two Mountain West hurlers named to the list joined by San Jose State senior Fineas Bonta-Smith.
Completing a sensational freshman season in 2018, the Hayward, Calif., native ranked second on the team with 24 appearances on the mound while making seven starts. Mitchell posted a 4-3 record and ranked second in the MW with a 3.28 ERA while tossing 57.2 innings and striking out 53.
The southpaw held opponents to a MW-low .197 batting average while also leading the league in hits allowed (40), runs allowed (23), earned runs allowed (21) and only gave up an earned run in eight of his 24 appearances.
Mitchell's best performance of his first season as a Bulldog came on May 13 against Hawai'i tossing a season-best seven innings allowing only two Rainbow Warriors hits while striking out a season-high seven in a 3-1 win.

In total, 26 conferences are represented on the preseason watch list with at least two players coming from 17 different leagues. The Midseason Watch List will be released on April 24 with the finalists announced June 5 and the winner revealed on June 15.
