‘Dogs swallow first loss in tough outing at Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. – The Fresno State women's lacrosse team's hot streak came to an end on Thursday as it fell to reigning Pac-12 champion Stanford, 17-7, in Laird Q. Cagan Stadium at Maloney Field. The Bulldogs are now 3-1 on the season.

Junior attacker Kayla Galet led the 'Dogs across the board, firing two goals and winning three draw controls.

Galet, Tiffiny Wallace, Ryleigh Bone, Jordyn Pandolfo, Marina Mayo, Abbigayle Roberts, Sydney Skalstad, Kayle Kaesbauer, Hannah Krats, Olivia Mannon and Alex Romanowski earned the start for Fresno State, with Laurel Maunder in goal.

FIRST HALF
Stanford came out firing and took control from the beginning. The Cardinal scored six unanswered goals in the opening 15 minutes. Fresno State then got on the board with a goal from Galet, her fifth on the year. Bone then fired another goal to inch the 'Dogs closer and continue her streak of scoring a goal in each game this season.

Stanford responded soon after, adding two more goals to grasp an 8-2 lead with eight minutes left in the half. Fresno State fought back with Kayla Galet's second goal of the game, but Stanford poured in four more unanswered goals to take a 12-3 lead into the half.

SECOND HALF
Stanford continued to build on its lead with another goal, but Skalstad neutralized it minutes later with a goal of her own. The Cardinal didn't let up though, netting another pair of goals to take a 15-4 lead with 15 minutes to go in the game.

Despite the deficit, Fresno State didn't concede as sophomore midfielder Dawson Chalifoux found the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season. Stanford then came right back with two more goals of its own, taking a 17-5 lead.

Fresno State still refused to bow out as senior Emily Miller fired her second goal of the season. Mayo then gave a parting blow to the Cardinal with a goal in the waning seconds to bring the 'Dogs within 10. Stanford finished out on top, 17-7.

NOTABLE STATS
Stanford led Fresno State in most categories, but the 'Dogs came out on top in free position shots at 6-1 and made 16 saves to Stanford's 10.

Aside from Galet's performance, Pandolfo was active on the defensive end, scooping three ground balls, causing one turnover and winning one draw control. Maunder and redshirt freshman goalie Courtney Walburger split time in goal, making 16 combined saves.

WHAT'S NEXT
Fresno State will hit the East Coast for the first time this season, traveling to Florida to take on Jacksonville and Stetson. The 'Dogs will face Jacksonville on March 1 at 3 p.m. PT at D.B. Milne Field in Jacksonville, Fla. The Bulldogs will then square off against Stetson on March 3 at 8 a.m. PT at the Athletic Training Center in Deland, Fla.
