No. 15 Fresno State wraps up 2019 Tina Finali Invitational with 17-5 win over Cal Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Fresno State water polo team finished the 2019 Tina Finali Invitational with two wins on Saturday at the Samuelson Aquatics Center. The No. 15 Bulldogs defeated invite host Cal Lutheran 17-5, before posting a 16-5 win over the University of Toronto in an exhibition game.
Fresno State improved to 4-8 on the season.
vs. Cal Lutheran – Trystyn Vuori opened up scoring with a goal off a power play three minutes into the first quarter. Cal Lutheran drew an exclusion to score on a power play of its own, to make it a 1-1 game with 5:14 left in the first quarter. The Bulldogs would go on a 4-0 run to finish the quarter.
The Bulldogs continued their offensive dominance in the second quarter with a quick goal from Emily Diacono to extend their lead to 6-1. Fresno State would score five consecutive goals to finish the second quarter, keeping Cal Lutheran scoreless for 10 minutes. The Bulldogs took an 11-1 lead into the half.
Woodruff opened up scoring in the third quarter, but the Royals responded with a goal of their own. Fresno State scored back-to-back goals to make it a 14-2 game with 4:56 left in the third quarter. Cal Lutheran scored two consecutive goals to end the quarter.
Sienna Jagielski opened the fourth quarter with a goal. The Royals would score one last goal before time expired. The Bulldogs took the win 14-5.
Sydney Coachman led the Bulldogs on offense with three goals. Mackenzie Richards and Madelynn Garcia split time in the goal for Fresno State, the duo combined a total of 10 saves.
vs. Toronto (Exhibition)– Fresno State started the game with seven consecutive goals, holding Toronto scoreless in the first quarter.
Brooke Barlow and Isabella Magno would partner up for back-to-back goals to take a 9-0 lead over the Varsity Blue. Toronto would fight back scoring two goals of its own, to make it a 9-2 game with 2:46 left in the quarter. Fresno State scored two more goals to take an 11-2 lead into halftime.
Fresno State opened the third quarter with back-to-back goals. Toronto would find the back of the net with 3:52 left in the third quarter, but Megan Greenwood countered with a goal for the Bulldogs. Fresno State took a 14-4 lead into the final quarter.
Toronto would rally for one more goal in the fourth quarter, but Fresno State took the win 16-5.
Greenwood led the Bulldogs on offense with four goals. Richards and Garcia split time in the goal, the duo combined for 5 saves.
What's next – Fresno State will travel to compete in the Michigan Invite March 2-3.
