No. 13 Fresno State posts wins over Saint Francis and No. 15 LBSU on day one of Wolverine Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Fresno State water polo team finished the first day of the 2019 Wolverine Invitational with two wins. The Bulldogs defeated Saint Francis, 17-7 before besting No. 15 Long Beach State, 14-11 on Saturday at Canham Natatorium.
This marks the first time in program history that Fresno State has won two games in a single-tournament.
"Today was great for us, coming out of the day with two wins," said head coach Natalie Benson. "The team played great this evening, coming together to fight through a physical game against LBSU. Many individuals stepped up tonight and the team collectively made some nice improvements."
Fresno State improves to 6-8 on the season. The Bulldogs are currently on a four-game winning streak, the longest in program history.
How It Happened vs. Saint Francis – The Red Flash opened up scoring in the first quarter, but Callie Woodruff would even the score with 6:48 left in the quarter. The Bulldogs would continue firing on offense, going on a 4-0 run to end the quarter.
Woodruff would score her second goal of the match, off a pass from Claire Schade, to kick off the second quarter. Trystyn Vuori would follow will another goal for the 'Dogs. Saint Francis made an offensive push scoring back-to-back goals to make it a 6-3 game with 4:26 left in the quarter. Emily Nicholson scored back-to-back goals, earning a hat trick, to give the 'Dogs an 8-3 lead. Daphne Guevremont scored the last goal of the quarter, Fresno State took a 9-4 lead into halftime.
The Red Flash struck first in the third quarter, but Woodruff's counter with a goal to make it a hat trick. The 'Dogs would continue their offensive dominance when Nicholson scored on a power play to give Fresno State an 11-5 lead. On the next play, Nicholson rebounded her own shot and sent it into the back of the net to tie her career-high with five goals. The 'Dogs tacked on two more goals to finish the quarter and take a 16-5 lead into the final quarter.
The Red Flash would manage to score two more goals before the end of regulation, but the 'Dogs would take the win 17-7.
Nicholson led Fresno State on offense with five goals. Schade dished a career-high seven assists to go with two goals for a career-high nine points. Madelynn Garcia and Mackenzie Richards split time in the goal, combining for four saves in the game.
vs. No. 15 LBSU – Daphne Guevremont opened up scoring with a penalty shot. The 49ers evened the score 1-1 with a penalty shot of their own. Guevremont netted her second goal of the game to put the 'Dogs up 2-1. Fresno State's offense finished the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 7-1 lead, including three goals from Woodruff for a hat trick. Guevremont capped the run with a goal off a penalty shot, logging a hat trick.
The beginning of the second quarter was a defensive battle as neither team able to gain the advantage. Two 'Dogs were out of the game due to exclusions, LBSU tried to take advantage of the situation but Richards came up with a huge save. LBSU scored the first goal of the quarter with 4:58 left. Vuori scored back-to-back goals to give Fresno State a 9-2 advantage. LBSU responded with a goal to make it 9-3. Richards stayed strong in the goal for the 'Dogs making two consecutive saves on power plays, but the 49ers would go on a 3-0 run to finish the quarter. Fresno State took an 9-5 lead into halftime.
LBSU won the sprint to start the third quarter. LBSU would continue the momentum with back-to-back goals, making it a two-goal game 9-7. Guevremont ended the 49ers five-goal run with a made penalty shot. The teams exchanged goals to end the quarter. Fresno State took an 11-8 lead into the final quarter.
LBSU won the sprint to start the fourth quarter. Fresno State's defense made a crucial block, but LBSU would counter with a steal. The steal turned into a goal to make it a two-goal game, 11-9. Nicholson found the back of the net to extend Fresno State's lead. Richards had two big back-to-back saves to keep the 49ers at bay. The 'Dogs had two exclusions whistled against them, 49ers who were up two players scored on the power play to make it 13-10. Fresno State and LBSU scored one last goal apiece as the 'Dogs took the win 14-11.
Guevremont led Fresno State's offense with a career-high four goals. Richards was strong in the cage with 10 saves, her fourth double-digit save output this season.Â
