No. 13 Fresno State splits final day of 2019 Wolverine Invitational

The Fresno State water polo team split two games on the second day of the 2019 Wolverine Invitational, falling to No. 7 Michigan, 20-8 and defeated No. 21 Marist College, 14-6.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Fresno State water polo team split two games on the second day of the 2019 Wolverine Invitational, falling to No. 7 Michigan, 20-8 and defeated No. 21 Marist College, 14-6. The Bulldogs have won five of their last six games.Â
"We had a great, competitive weekend out in Ann Arbor," head coach Natalie Benson said. "There were some new challenges presented to the team, and for the most part, they were able to rise up to the competitive situations they faced this weekend. I was happy with the team's ability to manage different defensive schemes, as well as a few new wrinkles on offense. Our goal every time we play is to get better each possession. We were able to do that this weekend which is beneficial as we head into more single games and conference play."Â
Fresno State improves to 7-9 (0-0 GCC).Â
vs. No. 7 Michigan – The Wolverines opened the game with back-to-back goals. Callie Woodruff put the 'Dogs on the scoreboard, to make it a one-goal game with 5:15 left in the first quarter. The Wolverines finished the quarter on a 3-0 run to take a 5-1 lead.Â
Emily Diacono opened scoring in the second quarter. Michigan made another offensive push, going on a 3-0 run to take an 8-2 lead. Mackenzie Richards made a big save for the 'Dogs to stop the Wolverines' run. Isabella Magno put Fresno State back on the scoreboard scoring on a penalty shot with 3:46 left. Michigan finished the quarter on a 3-0 run. The Wolverines took an 11-3 lead into halftime.Â
Michigan continued its run, scoring back-to-back goals to start the third quarter. Woodruff scored her second goal of the game on a power play. Michigan tacked on three more goals to take a 16-4 lead. Trystyn Vuori scored with 1:03 left in the quarter to stop Michigan's run. The Wolverines closed out the quarter with a goal off a penalty shot.Â
Madelynn Garcia subbed in for the 'Dogs to start the fourth quarter. Daphne Guevremont opened scoring in the second half as Fresno State trailed, 17-6. The Wolverines scored three consecutive goals before Magno ended their run with her second goal of the game for the 'Dogs. Sienna Jagielski swiped a steal and Magno capitalized with a goal to finish the game with a hat trick. Michigan would take the win 20-8.
vs. No. 21 Marist College – Fresno State won the sprint to open the game. Emily Nicholson grabbed a rebound and sent the ball to the back of the net to give Fresno State a 1-0 lead. Richards made a big save to give the 'Dogs possession, Claire Schade scored another goal to go up 2-0. Richards made clutch back-to-back saves to keep Marist scoreless.
Sydney Coachman scored a goal to make it a 3-0 run for Fresno State. Marist scored its first goal of the game with 3:24 left in the quarter, but Woodruff responded with a goal on a power play. Richards made a big save for the 'Dogs on a power play to keep the momentum in Fresno State's favor. Maddie Loggins finished the quarter with a goal to give Fresno State a 5-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.Â
Woodruff scored on a fast break to open the second quarter for a hat trick and give Fresno State a 6-1 lead. Marist rallied for a goal, but the 'Dogs would respond with back-to-back goals. Fresno State took a 8-2 lead into halftime.Â
Marist won the sprint to open the second half, but Loggins responded with a Fresno State goal. Coachman logged another goal to give Fresno State a 10-2 lead with 5:50 left. The 'Dogs would tack on another two goals from Woodruff and Schade, respectively. Fresno State took a 13-4 lead into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter started with strong defense as neither team scored for the first five minutes of the quarter. Marist struck first, scoring with 3:47 left in regulation. Elsie Judy scored on a penalty shot to round out scoring for the 'Dogs. The Red Foxes would score one more goal, but Fresno State would walk away with a 14-6 victory.Â
Woodruff finished with a team-high four goals, tying her season-high. Richards finished with 10 saves, her fourth game with double-digits saves.Up next
