No. 13 Fresno State trounces George Washington 18-8

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State water polo team defeated George Washington 18-8 in the Aquatics Center, Wednesday night. Emily Nicholson scored a game-high four goals for the Bulldogs.
"It was good to be home," head coach Natalie Benson said. "It's good for us to have a few consecutive home games to get ready for conference play, because that's when it really matters. We're not used to playing on Wednesdays. I thought our energy could have been better, but we got the job done tonight."Â

How it happened – The Colonials won the sprint to start the game, but Daphne Guevremont grabbed her first steal of the game to give the Bulldogs possession. Fresno State capitalized on its first possession when Sydney Coachman found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs continued offensive dominance with five consecutive goals to take a 5-0 lead. After being held scoreless for six minutes by the Bulldogs' defense, the Colonials scored their first goal with 1:42 left in the quarter. Megan Greenwood would score the final goal of the quarter, Fresno State took a 6-1 lead.
The teams exchanged goals to start the quarter. Nicholson scored back-to-back goals to spark a 4-0 run by the Bulldogs, taking an 11-2 lead with 2:25 left in the quarter. George Washington scored the final goal of the second quarter, but Fresno State took an 11-3 lead into halftime.
Trystyn Vuori opened scoring in the third quarter, but George Washington quickly responded with a goal of its own. Nicholson scored with 4:50 left in the quarter to make it a hat trick, Fresno State took a 13-4 lead. The Colonials and the Bulldogs each scored a goal to end the quarter. The Bulldogs went into the final eight minutes with a 14-5 lead.
George Washington won the sprint to start the final quarter. The Colonials were a perfect 4-0 in sprints on the night. George Washington struck first, scoring a goal with 6:15 left in the game. Callie Woodruff and Vuori teamed up for back-to-back goals, both would finish the game with hat tricks. The Colonials scored one more time to finish the game with eight total goals. The Bulldogs took the win 18-8.
Mackenzie Richards and Madelynn Garcia split time in the goal for Fresno State. They combined for eight saves on the night. Six Bulldogs recorded multiple goals in the victory.
