FRESNO, Calif. – Following a personal best 4,082 points last week to capture her second Mountain West pentathlon championship, Jestena Mattson earned her first trip to the NCAA Championships late Tuesday night as the NCAA released its list of entries. The senior will be one of 16 athletes to contend at the indoor championships in Birmingham, Alabama on March 8.
Mattson will be the first Bulldog athlete to participate at the indoor championships since Je'Nia Sears competed in the long jump in 2013.
The Bulldog senior earned her spot with a personal best and school record point total that she posted on Feb. 21 at the Mountain West Indoor Championships. Mattson finished in the top five in all five events which included setting a new personal best of 12.81m in the shot put and tying her career best in the high jump at 1.70m.
In 2017, Mattson became the first Bulldog to win a conference championship in the pentathlon. Last week, she became the first Fresno State athlete, male or female, to hold three conference championships in the combined events (2 pentathlon, 1 heptathlon).
The pentathlon will begin at the championships at 12:15 p.m. CT/10:15 a.m. PT at the Birmingham CrossPlex on March 8.
