LAS VEGAS – The Fresno State track and field teams opened the 2019 season this weekend in Las Vegas at the UNLV Spring Invitational. The Bulldogs walked away with 19 top-five finishes on the women's team, seven in the top three, while the men placed 13 in the top 10.

The 'Dogs were led in field where its top finishers of the meet came in the high jump and discus throw. Senior Varvara Klyuchnikova placed second in the event with her best clearance coming at 1.75m. In the discus, freshman Ronja Sowalder also took second with a top toss of 46.68m.

Also grabbing high marks in the field were Andira Ferguson, 5.72m in the long jump, Tahjnee Thurston, a personal best 46.89m in the hammer throw, and Isabel Posch, 40.22m in the javelin. All three placed third in their events.

On the track, Ellie Leather earned third in the 1500 meters, clocking a time of 4:36.06, while Tieara Norman finished the third in the 400 hurdles at 1:00.25.

Like the women, the men's top finishes of the weekend also came in the field.

Tanner Torrez recorded a personal best clearance of 2.00m on his third attempt at the height in the high jump. In the pole vault, Shane Atkinson cleared 4.65m for fifth in the pole vault, his highest mark since the 2016 season.

The men's top result on the track came from its 4x400 team comprised of Jonathan Beasley, David Barajas, Jahwanza Lawford and Jeremy Shumaker which finished fourth with time of 3:27.80.
