Diamond 'Dog Ashford named a Senior CLASS Award Candidate

Fresno State Baseball senior outfielder Zach Ashford has been named a candidate for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award, the organization announced on Friday.
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Fresno State Baseball senior outfielder Zach Ashford has been named a candidate for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award, the organization announced on Friday.
Thirty NCAA baseball student-athletes who excel both on and off the field were selected as candidates for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate baseball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
A four-year Bulldog, Ashford has excelled both on and off the field over his time at Fresno State as he has been a three-time Academic All-Mountain West selection in 2016-18 and earned Mountain West Scholar-Athlete honors in 2016.
The Clovis native and 2015 Buchanan High School graduate has maintained a 3.34 GPA while pursuing a degree in kinesiology exercise science. In addition to his classroom accolades, Ashford has also spent time volunteering in the community at the Walk to End Alzheimer's, Toys 4 Tots and with youth at Team Smile.
On the field, Ashford has been a standout earning Second-Team All-Mountain West honors in 2018 after reaching base in 53 of the 'Dogs 54 games. He has carried that momentum over to 2019 where he has reached base in all 14 games this spring. In his career, Ashford has played in 172 games with 111 starts while hitting .336 from the plate with 183 hits in 544 at-bats. He has notched 46 extra-base hits with 32 doubles to go along with nine triples and five home runs while adding 76 RBI and 103 runs scored.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four C's of community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2019 College World Series in June.
