FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State scored six runs in each of the first two innings and finished with a season-high 14 runs while Hailey Dolcini and Danielle East combined for a one-hit shutout as the 'Dogs topped San Diego, 14-0, in five innings on the first day of the Fresno State Invitational.
Â
Fresno State (17-11) has now won 10 straight non-conference games and improved to 9-2 at home this season. After losing to CSU Bakersfield, 12-4, in the first game of the Fresno State Invitational to open the day on Thursday, San Diego (14-17) was tagged for 26 runs in its two contests on the day.
Â
McKenzie Wilson and Rachel Minogue both hit 3-for-3 over the first two innings of Thursday's game, with Minogue driving in two runs and Wilson stealing two bases and scoring twice. Vanessa Hernandez drove in the first runs of the game with a three-run double and Hayleigh Galvan and Kaitlyn Jennings both tallied two hits to lead the Bulldog onslaught.
Â
On the other side of the scorecard, San Diego had a bunt single to start the game but did not register another hit. Dolcini tallied six strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work and East allowed a walk but nothing else over the last 1.1 innings. Â
Â
How it Happened
The Toreros got their first two hitters aboard with a single and a walk to start the game but Dolcini struck out two USD hitters to strand the runners. The 'Dogs quickly loaded the bases in the bottom of the first on two hits and a walk and Hernandez brought all three home with her MW-leading 12th double of the season (watch). Galvan drove in Hernandez with a one-out single (watch), the 'Dogs scored a fifth run on a strikeout and passed ball, and Wilson had her second hit of the inning to make it 6-0.
Â
In the second, Galvan drove in Jade Nua with her second RBI single of the game (watch) and Haley Fuller split the gap in right center to double-home Galvan (watch). After a pitching change, Jennings tripled to left center to bring in Fuller (watch) and the 'Dogs would load the bases with two away for Minogue, who made it 12-0 with a two-run single (watch).
Â
Dolcini retired nine straight batters, thanks in part to a sensational diving catch from Wilson to end the third (watch), before allowing a walk to start the top of the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Bulldog freshmen Bailey Clifton and Alexandra Preston both made their collegiate debuts as pinch hitters and Preston singled for her first career hit (watch). Fresno State loaded the bases again after a single and a walk and Kelcey Carrasco drew a walk to force in a run. The 14th Bulldog run would score on San Diego's third error of the game.
Â
East finished the contest with a 1-2-3 top of the fifth inning.
