'Dogs finish day one of Golden State Invite with wins over GCU and Hawai'i

SACRAMENTO – The Fresno State men's tennis team finished day one of the Golden State Invitational with two wins, Friday afternoon at the Sacramento State Collegiate Courts. The Bulldogs defeated Grand Canyon University 4-2 and Hawai'i 4-0.
"It was a good day for the Bulldogs," said head coach Luke Shields. "We showed some toughness. After losing the doubles point against Grand Canyon, we responded against a really talented team. We competed really well in singles. Mantas (Bugailiskis) had a big day and toughed out two matches against quality opponents. Zdenek (Derkas) played a really smart match in the morning and was really focused in his second match. He continues to gain confidence with each match. We have a great opportunity tomorrow to bring home another title."
Fresno State improves to 9-7 (1-0 MW) on the season.
vs. GCU – The Bulldogs sported a new doubles lineup with Mantas Bugailiskis and Patrik Pech at No. 1, Cem Erturk and Zdenek Derkas at No. 2 along with Cagatay Soke and Angus Bradshaw at No. 3.
The Antelopes took the win at the No. 1 position 6-2. The Bulldogs logged the win at No. 3, 6-2. GCU clinched the doubles point at the No. 2 position 6-2, to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
GCU extended its lead to 2-0 when Erturk fell at the No. 4 position 6-2, 6-2. Soke put the 'Dogs on the scoreboard with a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 5 position. Bradshaw tied the match 2-2 with a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 3 position.
Fresno State took the lead with a 7-6, 6-1 win from Bugailiskis at the No. 2 position. Derkas clinched the match for the 'Dogs at the No. 1 position, defeating his opponent 6-3, 7-6.
The 'Dogs defeated the Lopes 4-2 to advance to the next round.
vs. Hawai'i – Fresno State stuck with the same doubles lineup as the first match.
Bradshaw and Soke took the win at the No. 3 position 6-2. Hawai'i responded with a 6-1 win at the No. 2 position.
Pech and Bugailiskis clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory at the No. 1 position, to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
Derkas gave the 'Dogs a 2-0 lead with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the No. 1 position. At the No. 5 position, Soke extended the lead to 3-0 with a 6-1, 7-6 win. The match was clinched at the No. 2 position when Bugailiskis defeated his opponent 7-5, 7-5.
Fresno State defeated Hawai'i 4-0 to advance to the championship match on Saturday, March 9 at 10:30 a.m. PT against Mountain West foe Nevada.
