Mattson places 13th in pentathlon at NCAA Indoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Making Fresno State's first appearance at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships since 2013, Jestena Mattson placed 13th for the Bulldogs in the pentathlon on Friday at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Entering the championships ranked No. 15 in the event, the senior moved up two spots to finish with 4,032 points.
"We couldn't be more proud of Jestena today," head coach Scott Winsor said. "She fought through a tough day in a couple events and had a very strong finish in the 800 meters. She came in at 15 and finished 13th in the country. She's a conference champion and a school record holder. Today was a great way to finish her indoor career."
Mattson opened the day scoring 995 points in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.60. She followed that up with by finishing just shy of her personal best in the high jump, clearing 1.69m/5-6.5.
The senior's highest placing in an event came in the shot put, finishing seventh, after landing a toss of 11.97m/39-3.25. The Bulldog then recorded a mark of 5.55m/18-2.5 in the long jump.
Mattson closed out the pentathlon with another seventh-place finish, clocking a time of 2:19.41 in the 800 meters, less than three-tenths of a second back of her personal best.
