No. 17 Fresno State trounces Santa Clara, 15-8

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The No. 17 Fresno State water polo team defeated Santa Clara 15-8 on the road, Sunday afternoon at the Sullivan Aquatics Center.Â
Trystyn Vuori and Emily Nicholson netted a combined nine goals for Fresno State. Vuori's five goals set a new career-high for the sophomore. Mackenzie Richards grabbed nine saves in the goal for the Bulldogs.
Fresno State improves to 11-14 (3-3 GCC) on the season, and moved into a tie for fourth place in the Golden Coast Conference standings.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Daphne Guevremont opened the scoring with 6:26 left in the first quarter. Santa Clara immediately countered with a goal to tie the game 1-1. Nicholson put the 'Dogs up 2-1 when she found the back of the net with 5:48 remaining and made it back-to-back goals when she scored on a power play to give Fresno State a 3-1 lead. The Bulldogs finished the quarter with a two-goal lead.
The Broncos won the sprint to open the second quarter. Vuori struck first for the 'Dogs with 5:55 left in the quarter to put Fresno State up 4-1. Santa Clara responded, but Callie Woodruff and Nicholson combined for back-to-back goals to take a 6-2 lead. Fresno State scored another pair of goals to make it a 4-0 run before the Broncos put one more point on the board. The 'Dogs owned an 8-3 lead at halftime.
Claire Schade won the sprint to start the third quarter. The Broncos sent the ball to the back of the net to make it an 8-4 game with 3:55 left in the third quarter. Nicholson and Sienna Jagielski scored a goal apiece to end the quarter with the 'Dogs up 10-4.
Schade won the sprint again to give the 'Dogs possession to open the final eight minutes. The Bulldogs and the Broncos exchanged goals to start the quarter, Fresno State held an 11-5 lead after Emily Diacono scored her second goal of the game with 6:45 left. Schade tacked on one more to put the 'Dogs in front 12-5 less than 20 seconds later before Vuori's offensive dominance took over to close the game. Vuori scored the Bulldogs' final three goals over the last four minutes to give her a career-high five goals in the contest. The Broncos were able match each one of Vuori's goals, keeping the Bulldogs lead at seven as Fresno State walked away with the win, 15-8.

Fresno State will travel to face Concordia on Friday, April 19 at 1:30 p.m. PT for the final regular season game.
