Wilson named to Schutt Sports / NFCA Freshman of the Year Top 25 list

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Fresno State freshman outfielder McKenzie Wilson has been named one of 25 finalist for the Schutt Sports / NFCA Freshman of the Year award announced on Thursday.

The national honor is presented annually to the top freshman in NCAA Div. I. Wilson is the first Fresno State player ever named to the Freshman of the Year Top 25 list and is one of two Mountain West players selected along with Utah State shortstop Lexi Orozco. Past winners of the award include Jocelyn Alo, Rachel Garcia, Amanda Lorenz, and Paige Parker.

Wilson leads the MW with 26 stolen bases this year and also leads the Bulldogs hitting .378 and with 35 runs scored. Her 26 steals are six more than any other MW player this season and she ranks 20th in NCAA Div. I with 0.63 stolen bases per game. She already has the fifth most stolen bases in a season in program history and is just eight steals shy of the single season record of 34, set by Brenna Moss in 2013 and 2014.

The Long Beach native has had at least one steal in 16 of the last 26 games with six multi-steal games. She is also tied for third in the MW with 48 hits and leads the team with six 3-hit games this year. She has 14 total multi-hit games on the season and has struck out only seven times in 127 official at-bats with 12 walks and three hit-by-pitches.

The Bulldogs are 22-10 this season with Wilson hitting leadoff. She is currently on a nine-game reached base streak and reached in 10 straight games earlier this season while also recording a seven-game hitting streak. Wilson has continued to improve throughout her rookie season as she has hit .453 with 12 stolen bases and 16 runs scored over the last 16 games while striking out just once.

The top 10 finalists for the Schutt Sports / NFCA Freshman of the Year will be announced on Thursday, May 9. The top three will be announced on Thursday, May 21, and the National Freshman of the Year will be revealed on Tuesday, May 28
