Stephenson fires 62 during record-setting second round

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. – The Fresno State men's golf team carded its best single round team score vs. par (18-under 266) in the last 25 years during the second round of the SeattleU Invitational on Monday at Chambers Bay. The record-setting round helped place the Bulldogs in second place, bunched in between leader UCLA and third place Oregon State, moving toward Tuesday's final round.
Leading the way in the second round was freshman Tommy Stephenson, who shot a 9-under 62. It is the lowest score shot by a Bulldog on record, dating back to the 1993-94 season, surpassing a trio of golfers in that span that posted 63 – Todd Angel, Bhavik Patel and Nick Watney. Stephenson's second round included back-to-back eagles on holes No. 18 and No. 1 during a round he started off of hole No. 4.
In spite of the 62, Stephenson still trails two teammates, sophomore Kevin Huff and senior Alex Lee, who are both tied for second place, while he sits in a tie for sixth. Stephenson opened with a 3-over 74.
Huff and Lee, however, fired four rounds in the 60's between them. Huff (68-67) and Lee (67-68) are both 7-under after Monday's 36 holes.
Not stopping there, redshirt senior Cody Riecks fired a pair of scores in the 60's to help place him in a tie for 10th. He is 5-under after registering a 3-under 68 and a 2-under 69.
Rounding out the Bulldogs in action was freshman Seldon Doyle. He is tied for 86th after shooting a 1-over 72 and 6-over 77.
The final round of the SeattleU Redhawk Invitational gets underway at 8 a.m. PT on Tuesday morning with a shotgun start. Live stats can be viewed on BirdieFire.com.
