Two Bulldogs earn All-MW accolades; Derkas named MW Player of the Year

FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State junior Zdenek Derkas was named the 2019 Mountain West Player of the Year, the conference announced Wednesday night. The Bulldogs also chalked two All-MW Singles selections.
In addition to the player of the year award, Derkas was named to the All-MW Singles team and his teammate, junior Angus Bradshaw, was also an All-MW Singles team honoree.
With all matches played at the No. 1 position, Derkas owned a team-best 23-9 overall singles record and a 19-6 mark in dual play. He finished conference play as the only player to go undefeated with a 7-0 record at the No. 1 position and did not drop a set during conference play. He finished the regular season winning 12 of 13 matches. He posted six wins over ranked opponents including a marque win over Alabama's No. 32 Mazen Osama at the Blue and Gray National Tennis Classic on Feb. 22.
The Czech Republic native, paired with four different partners during the spring to post a 10-8 doubles record. He owned a team-best 7-3 doubles record with partner Cem Erturk. These postseason awards make it four career All-MW honors for Derkas over his three years at Fresno State. He was named the 2017 Freshman of the Year and a 2018 All-MW Singles selection. Derkas is the first Bulldog to earn conference player of the year accolades since Remi Boutillier in 2012 and joins an elite group in the Mountain West, becoming the fifth player in its history to win both freshman of the year and player of the year.
Bradshaw compiled an 8-12 singles record in dual play and a 3-2 record in conference play during his first season with the Bulldogs. He played primarily at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions for the Bulldogs, owning a 5-2 record when playing at No. 3. He has proven to be a relentless player, pushing six matches into third sets this season including four during conference play. Bradshaw clinched Fresno State's 4-2 victory over Boise State, defeating his opponent 7-5, 6-3. This is Bradshaw's first career all-conference accolade.
Fresno State (15-10, 5-2) locked in the No. 3 seed in the 2019 Mountain West Men's Tennis Championship Tournament, and are slated to face No. 6 Nevada on Thursday, April 25 at 6 p.m. PT at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
Single session tickets for Thursday, Friday and Saturday are $10 for adults and $5 for children. All-session tickets/wristbands are $20 for adults and $10 for children. Tickets will begin being sold one hour prior to the start of competition each day. There will be free admission for Fresno State students.
