FRESNO, Calif. – Kelcey Carrasco and Hayleigh Galvan both homered, with Carrasco delivering Fresno State's first grand slam of the season, and Hailey Dolcini allowed just two hits and one unearned run and struck out nine as the 'Dogs made quick work of New Mexico winning the series opener 9-1 in five innings.
Fresno State (31-15, 9-7 MW) improved to 18-5 at home this year, the team's most home wins since the 2015 season. The 'Dogs have won nine of their last 11 MW games while New Mexico (12-33, 3-13 MW) lost for the 12th time in its last 14 games. At just one hour and 31 minutes, Friday's contest was easily Fresno State's quickest game of the year.
Carrasco went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Galvan was 2-for-2 with a walk and three runs scored and Jade Nua was 1-for-1 with three runs as the trio, hitting 5th, 6th, and 7th in the lineup, combined to go 6-for-6 with two walks, a hit by pitch, five RBIs, and eight runs. McKenzie Wilson also had her team-leading seventh three-hit game of the season and drove in two runs from the leadoff spot.
How it Happened
Dolcini struck out the side in the first and had one more K in a perfect second inning. The 'Dogs had a hit and a walk but did not score in the bottom of the first, but in the second Fresno State loaded the bases with nobody out as Galvan walked, Nua was hit by a pitch, and Carrasco singled to start the inning. Vanessa M. Hernandez was hit by a pitch to bring in Galvan from third, Wilson followed with an RBI groundout, and Miranda Rohleder singled in Carrasco to put the home team up 3-0.
New Mexico got its lone run in the third as a walk, a single, and a Bulldog error gave the Lobos runners on the corners with one out and Aleyah Wilbon brought in a run with a groundout. The Bulldogs quickly got that run back as Galvan hit her team-leading seventh home run of the season with one out in the bottom of the third. The 'Dogs loaded the bases again with two out and Wilson singled in Nua to make it a 5-1 game.
After two more strikeouts from Dolcini in the top of the fourth, the 'Dogs loaded the bases again on a double from Rachel Minogue, a single from Galvan, and a walk from Nua. Carrasco then hit a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left center to clear the bases and put the home team up 9-1. With an eight-run lead, Dolcini quickly finished the game in the top of the fifth with a strikeout, a pop out, and another strikeout on just seven pitches (watch).
