EVANS, Ga. – After the first two rounds of the inaugural Augusta National Women's Amateur at Champions Retreat Golf Club, Fresno State sophomore Brigitte Thibault fell short of qualifying on Thursday for the final round. The field was narrowed down from 72 individuals to 30, who will compete for the first ANWA title on Saturday at Augusta National Golf Club.
"It's such a great event that I can't really complain," Thibault said despite not performing how she'd hoped. "It's different conditions, so I'm just still learning through the process, so I went with what I had. I had fun, so in the end, I'm happy."
Â
The Bulldog that received just one of 72 invitations around the world to compete at the historic event, carded a 7-over 79 in Wednesday's first round and a 3-over 75 in Thursday's second round.
Â
Despite missing the cut, the Fresno State sophomore will experience an opportunity of a lifetime on Friday, as she and the rest of the 72 invitees will play Augusta National Golf Club, home of the Masters tournament next week.
Â
"I'm actually so excited, because I never -- the Chairman's Dinner was my first time to Augusta [on Tuesday] -- so I'm obviously so excited," Thibault said about playing on Friday. "I just saw No. 1 off of those pictures, and you know, it was so different that I can't wait to play and see how it feels, and I have a well-known caddie to maybe take notes for next year and things like that. So just getting ready and just trying to get better one day at a time, so I'm excited."
Â
Friday's round is also a practice round for the 30 individuals that will compete for the inaugural ANWA title. NBC will provide live coverage of the event on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon PT.
