No. 15 Fresno State topples No. 25 Cal Baptist on Senior Day, 14-10

FRESNO, Calif. – The No. 15 Fresno State water polo team celebrated Senior Day with a 14-10 rout of No. 25 Cal Baptist, Saturday afternoon in the Aquatics Center. The Bulldogs honored the team's two seniors in Isabella Magno and Mackenzie Richards.
"These two young women were put in a unique position to have only two years to learn and fulfill their collegiate careers through the start of this new program," head coach Natalie Benson said. "By choosing to attend Fresno State, they chose to take on the responsibility of being the first upperclassmen of the group, while also trying to figure out the program for themselves. I respect them for their commitment to the team in our beginning stages, and wish nothing but the best for them both as they move into their professional careers."
Fresno State (10-14, 2-3 GCC) had four Bulldogs record multi-goal games. Sophomore Emily Nicholson led the way tying her career-high with five goals in the victory, also dishing one assist and drawing two key exclusions. Richards set a new career-high with 14 saves in goal for Fresno State.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trystyn Vuori won the sprint for the Bulldogs to open the game. Nicholson put the Bulldogs on the scoreboard with a goal off a pass from Claire Schade. Vuori followed with back-to-back goals to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead with 6:35 left in the quarter. CBU scored its first goal of the game at the five-minute mark, 3-1. Fresno State quickly responded with back-to-back goals to extend its lead 5-1. Vuori earned a hat trick in the game scoring with 1:49 left, the Bulldogs finished the first quarter with a 6-1 advantage over the Lancers.
Vuori won her second sprint of the day to give Fresno State possession to start the second quarter. Richards made a huge save on a power play for the Lancers with 4:15 left in the second quarter. Nicholson opened scoring in the quarter, netting a goal to give the Bulldogs a 7-1 lead. The Lancers found the back of the net at the three-minute mark for their second goal, but Vuori quickly countered with her fourth goal of the game. CBU ended the second quarter with another goal, but Fresno State took an 8-3 lead into halftime.
Schade won the sprint for the Bulldogs to open the third quarter. Fresno State didn't waste any time, the Bulldogs scored two consecutive goals to take a 10-3 lead. The Lancers ended the run, scoring with 5:02 left in the third quarter. Nicholson drew a penalty, Daphne Guevremont converted the penalty shot for the Bulldogs. CBU found an offensive spark posting back-to-back goals. Despite the run by CBU to finish the quarter, Fresno State took an 11-6 lead into the final eight minutes.
The Bulldogs swept the sprints for the first time this season, Schade grabbed the fourth win to give Fresno State possession to start the final quarter. Nicholson continued dominating on offense, scoring the Bulldogs' first goal of the quarter to grab a 12-6 advantage. Fresno State was whistled for an exclusion, but Richards grabbed another huge save on a power play to hold off the Lancers. Fresno State was whistled for another exclusion shortly after, but the Lancers would manage to convert this power play into a goal. CBU grabbed a quick steal and took the ball down for another goal, closing in on the Bulldogs' lead 12-8. Nicholson drew a key exclusion, resulting in a goal for Fresno State to extend the lead. Richards came up with a big stop for the Bulldogs, allowing Guevremont to take the ball down and draw another exclusion. Vuori sent the ball back to Guevremont who found the back of the net on the power play, securing a 14-8 lead for the Bulldogs with 2:57 left in the game. With the game clock winding down, CBU stepped up and scored two goals within thirty seconds to make a play at a comeback. CBU, down by four goals, took its final timeout. The Bulldogs' defense finished the final 90 seconds of the game strong with a blocked shot from Schade and three saves from Richards. The Bulldogs polished off Senior Day with a 14-10 victory.
