Mattson in striking distance in heptathlon after Day 1 at MW Championships

CLOVIS, Calif. – Fresno State's Jestena Mattson opened the first day of the heptathlon at the 2019 Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships with 3,345 points on Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The senior sits in second place, 77 points back of San Diego State's Asia Smith. Â

Mattson opened the day with a solid mark in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 14.11 to put herself in the third. The mark was the second-fastest for the senior this season.

In the high jump, Mattson slipped back to fifth in the overall after only clearing 1.63m/5-4. The Parkdale, Oregon native moved back up the standings in the shot put as she took third with a mark of 11.95m/39-2.5.

Mattson continued to gain ground on the leader in the final event of the evening. The senior clocked a personal best time in the 200 meters at 24.29. Mattson's 3,345 point total is 13 points better than her first-day score from 2018. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â

Freshman Isabel Posch finished the day in 10th place with 2,674 points. Â
The final three events of the heptathlon will begin Thursday at 4:30 p.m. PT starting with the long jump.
