AUSTIN, Texas – Through four events, Fresno State's Jestena Mattson sits in 15th place in the heptathlon at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium. The Bulldog senior's 3,349 points is four more than her Day 1 school record which she set last month at the Mountain West Championships.
Â
The final day of the combined event will begin tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. PT with the long jump. The javelin will follow at 12:45 p.m. Both events can be seen on ESPN3. The heptathlon will conclude at 5:13 p.m. on ESPN2 with the 800 meters.
Â
Mattson opened up Day 1 of the competition finishing second in her heat of the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.13. Sitting 12th overall in the standings, the Bulldog struggled in the high jump with her highest clearance coming at 1.63m/5-4.25, which matched her height from last month's conference championship.
Â
After sliding outside of the top 20 through two events, Mattson moved up to 17th after the shot put where she posted a top mark of 11.81m/38-9 on her second attempt to place 12th in the field in the event.
Â
The senior saved her best for last on the first day. Despite placing fourth in the opening heat of the 200 meters, Mattson clocked a personal record at 24.12, sixth-best overall in the event. It was her highest event finish on the day. The 969 points, her most for an event on the day, pushed her two spots up in the stands to close Friday in 15th.
