AUSTIN, Texas – In the final meet of her Fresno State career, Jestena Mattson placed 12th in the heptathlon at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday evening at Mike A. Myers Stadium. The Bulldog finished the two-day competition with 5,576 points, the second-highest point total of her career. Â
Â
For the second time this year, Mattson earned second team All-America honors in the combined events after placing 13th in the pentathlon at indoor nationals in February. The Parkdale, Oregon native became the first Bulldog since Felicia Brown in 1996 to earn All-America honors in the heptathlon, and she is the only athlete in program history to earn multiple All-America honors in the combined events in their career. Mattson also became the third Fresno State athlete to earn multiple All-America honors in the last decade joining Annemarie Schwanz and Vanja Spaic.
Â
Mattson opened the day sitting 15th in the standings but gained ground on those ahead of her in the long jump. On her final attempt, the Bulldog landed a mark of 5.96m/19-6.75 which placed her ninth in the event. After making up those points, Mattson moved up two spots in the overall standings after the javelin as she landed a throw of 34.82m/114-3.
Â
In the final event, Mattson ran a time of 2:20.12 in the 800 meters. It was good enough to move her up one final spot, passing Nevada's Nicola Ader by five points in the overall standings.
Â
Mattson closes her collegiate career as one of the most decorated athletes in Fresno State history, a two-time All-American, four-time conference champion and six-time conference medalist.
