FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State soccer team opened its 2019 campaign with a 2-0 victory over Cal Poly in an exhibition match, Sunday night at the Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium.
"I think this was a good intregration of our freshman class," head coach Brian Zwaschka said. "We were able to mix up the lineup quite a bit, so we weren't relying completely on returners or relying completely on freshman. I thought everyone did a good job or looking after each other. We still have some things to work on before we retake the field." Â Â
The exhibition match was played in three 30-minute periods.
Tori Nicolo, Audrey Reyna, Racine Babb, Megan Amick, Lorena Montanes, Mariona Segales, Ele Avery, Shantay Tamez, Robyn McCarthy and Bailee Kern chalked the start for the Bulldogs, with Valentina Vivas in goal.
FIRST PERIOD
Junior Ele Avery drew a penalty and converted the free shot, giving the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute.
Fresno State would hold its one-goal lead through the first period. The Bulldogs outshot the Mustangs 5-3. Vivas notched two saves in the box.
SECOND PERIOD
After 60 minutes, the Bulldogs remained up by a goal on the scoreboard. Fresno State outshot Cal Poly 4-3. The Bulldog defense did not allow the Mustangs to record a shot on goal, but the Bulldogs forced the Mustang goalie to make two saves.
THIRD PERIOD
Fresno State extended its lead 2-0 when freshman Alyssa Renovato found the back of the net off a free kick from Megan Amick, in the 79th minute. Freshman goalkeeper Briana O'Dell played a strong 30 minutes in goal, chalking four saves to keep Cal Poly scoreless.
WHAT'S NEXT
Fresno State will go on the road to face Sacramento State on Thursday, Aug. 16 in an exhibition match.
The Bulldogs will return home on Aug. 22 to host Oregon at the Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium at 7 p.m. PT.
