Fresno State picked to finish seventh in 2019 MW coaches preseason poll

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The 12 Mountain West women's soccer head coaches chose the 2018 regular season champion Boise State as the preseason favorite to win the 2019 regular season title. Fresno State was picked to finish seventh in the MW, announced by the conference Tuesday afternoon.
"We first will respect the opinion of our peers," head coach Brian Zwaschka said, "and then carry on with improving on our place at the end of the season. This is good motivation."
Fresno State brings back All-Mountain West Second Team selection Ele Avery along with 15 additional returners. The Bulldogs added 10 newcomers, seven hailing from the Golden State, and one transfer in Mariona Segales (Pittsburgh).
The Bulldogs finished the 2018 season with an overall record of 6-10-4 (5-3-3 MW). Fresno State recorded its best conference record since 2013, advancing to the postseason tournament for the second consecutive season. The Bulldogs' season ended in the quarterfinals, falling to eventual champion San Jose State, 2-1.Â
The poll chalked Boise State (109 points – four first place votes), San Jose State (105 points – three first place votes), New Mexico (104 – three first place votes) and San Diego State (96 points – two first place votes) at the top of the conference.
UNLV (70 points), Wyoming (70 points), Fresno State (62) and Colorado College (59) were picked to finish in the middle of the conference. Â Â
While Utah State (40), Colorado State (33), Air Force (29) and Nevada (15) landed in the last four positions to round out the preseason rankings.
Fresno State will open MW conference play at home against Air Force on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. PT.
WHAT'S NEXTÂ
Fresno State will go on the road to face Sacramento State on Thursday, Aug. 16 in an exhibition match.
The Bulldogs will return home on Aug. 22 to host Oregon at the Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium at 7 p.m. PT.
