‘Dogs split Saturday slate at GBD Invite

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Fresno State cruised to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-20) sweep of Indiana State at the GBD Invite on Saturday morning before the 'Dogs fell to host Green Bay, 3-0 (25-11, 25-23, 25-23), to close tournament play for the Bulldogs.
Fresno State (2-1) started the season 2-0 for the fourth consecutive season before taking their first loss of the year against Green Bay, which is undefeated through three matches in its home tournament. The Bulldogs posted a winning record in their first tournament of the season for the fifth straight year.
Senior setter Madelyn Halteman and junior outside hitter Desiree Sukhov were both named to the GBD Invite All-Tournament team. Halteman averaged 10.40 assists and 2.10 digs per set while Sukhov had 4.20 kills and 2.00 digs per set over three matches.
The 'Dogs outhit Indiana State .281-.084 and had an 8-2 edge in service aces in the sweep of the Sycamores. Sukhov and Amilya Thompson each had a match-high 13 kills as Sukhov hit .360 and added five digs and Thompson had four. Grace Doyle, Savanah Smith, and Rebecca Rendahl each had three blocks in the match while Reagan Leonard had 17 digs and Halteman tallied 33 assists and eight digs. Jocelyn Rodriguez pitched in six digs and led the way with three service aces.
Sukhov also led the 'Dogs offensively against Green Bay with 10 kills along with five digs and three blocks. Doyle had a team season-high five blocks against the Phoenix along with four kills on a .375 hitting percentage and Rodriguez led with 13 digs. Fresno State had a 5-3 edge in aces but was outblocked by Green Bay 8-7 and was held to a .057 hitting percentage after hitting .248 or better in its first two matches of the season.
How it Happened – vs. Indiana State
Fresno State cruised to a first set win as it held Indiana State to just four kills and five attack errors for a -.032 hitting percentage. The 'Dogs hit .312 themselves in the opening set with seven different players recording kills. Fresno State never trailed in the set, turning a 12-8 lead into an 18-8 advantage with a 6-0 run and, after the Sycamores got within a 20-14 deficit, the 'Dogs scored five straight points to end the set with McKenzie Kramer and Lauren Sabbatini teaming up for a block on set point.
Indiana State led 3-1 in the second set before a 7-0 Bulldog run gave them an 8-3 lead. The 'Dogs hit a match-best .350 in the set with 17 kills and only three errors led by six kills from Thompson. Indiana State got back to a 10-8 deficit before Fresno State scored four straight points and led by at least four points for the remainder of the set, which ended on a kill from Doyle.
The third set was the closest of the three as the Sycamores held the Bulldogs to a .190 hitting percentage. Indiana State led 16-15 in the middle of the set before the Bulldogs scored six straight points, including a pair of blocks by Halteman and Rendahl, to take a 21-16 lead. The Sycamores got back within a 21-19 score but three more Bulldog points got them to match point up 24-19. Indiana State saved the first match point before Rendahl and Montez Uigaese had a block to clinch the win.
How it Happened – vs. Green Bay
After easily winning the first set in each of their first two matches of the season the 'Dogs were on the other end in a tough first set against Green Bay. The Phoenix led 5-0 and 11-3 early as the 'Dogs used both of their timeouts, and Green Bay ended up going on a 12-0 run to open up a 20-3 lead. After the Phoenix reached set point at 24-7 the 'Dogs rattled off four straight kills to build some momentum for the second before the Phoenix ended the first with a kill.
The second set was much more competitive as the 'Dogs trailed by just a point at 15-14 midway through. Fresno State trailed by just three points at 22-19 before two straight Green Bay points gave the home team set point at 24-19. The 'Dogs fended off four set points as a Green Bay attack error, kills by Doyle and Sukhov, and an ace from Uigaese made it 24-23, but on its fifth shot Green Bay got a kill to win the set.
The Bulldogs jumped to a 4-1 lead in the third set and later battled back from down 17-10 to get within a 21-19 deficit. After Green Bay went ahead 22-19, a service error by the Phoenix and back-to-back Bulldog blocks brought the visitors even at 22-22. Two straight Green Bay kills gave the Phoenix match point, and the 'Dogs stayed alive after a service error but Taylor Wolf registered her match-high 15th kill of the night to complete the Green Bay win.

Fresno State opens its home schedule hosting the Fresno State Invitational next Thursday in the Save Mart Center. The home opener will coming against CSU Bakersfield on Sept. 5 at 4:30 p.m.

Notes
- The 'Dogs started this season 2-0 for the fourth straight year but saw another long winning streak come to a close. The Bulldogs had won their first true road match of the year for eight straight seasons, dating back to 2010, before the loss Saturday night at Green Bay.
- The Bulldogs are now 20-2 over the last two seasons when winning the first set.
- The Bulldogs had won 16 straight matches in which they had the same or more aces than their opponent, but the 'Dogs took the loss against Green Bay despite a 5-3 edge in aces.
- Fresno State totaled 18 service aces while allowing just six opponent aces in the tournament and had a 26.0-21.0 edge in blocks.
- Doyle tallied 11.0 blocks over her first three collegiate matches, recording at least three blocks in every match while also tallying nine kills with a .304 hitting percentage
- Freshman Mikayla Weiss made her Fresno State debut vs. Indiana State and tallied two digs and one assist.
