'Dogs close Gamecock Fall Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Fresno State men's tennis team competed in the Gamecock Fall Invitational over the weekend. The tournament was highlighted by No. 63 Zdenek Derkas who advanced to the semifinal match of the Black Singles Draw.
The Bulldogs saw some of the top teams from around the nation, counting reigning national champion Texas, runner-up Wake Forest and quarterfinalist North Carolina. The event also had twenty ranked players in the draws.
DOUBLES
Angus Bradshaw and Derkas partnered up to battle in the Black Doubles Draw. The duo was slated to face Kiger and Soendergaard of North Carolina, but the Tar Heels withdrew, so Fresno State advanced. Bradshaw and Derkas fell to Dunlap and Jankulovski of Miami in a tiebreaker 8-7 (3) in the quarterfinals.
The Bulldogs moved to the consolation bracket, where they defeated Lagaev and Requant-Bicardi of Arizona 8-6.
SINGLES
Derkas was the No. 5 seed in the Black Singles Draw. He bested Josh Wilson of Liberty in a three-set battle 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-2. Derkas went on to defeat No. 4 Joshua Peck of North Carolina in the quarterfinals. He fell to No. 2 Ewan Moore of Tulane 6-0, 6-3.
Derkas moved to the consolation bracket where he was bested by Siddhant Banthia of Wake Forrest 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.
Bradshaw represented Fresno State in the Garnet Singles Draw. He opened the tournament with a big win over the No. 4 seed Bojan Jankulovski of Miami 6-1, 6-3 in the round of 16. He fell to No. 6 Raphael Lambling in the quarterfinals 7-5, 6-4.
The senior moved on to the consolation bracket where he fell to Connor Thomson of USC 6-0, 6-3. He also posted a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Dane Dunlap of Miami.
