Zdenek Derkas will represent the Mountain West Conference at the 2019 Oracle ITA Masters over the weekend, he will compete in both singles and mixed doubles. The tournament will begin on Thursday, Sept. 26 and finish on Sunday, Sept. 29.
Now in its fifth year, the Oracle ITA Masters will be hosted by Pepperdine University and the Malibu Racquet Club. The annual event has established itself as one of the premier events on the collegiate tennis calendar.
The tournament features elite NCAA Division I players in 32-player men's and women's singles draws and is the only collegiate event to showcase a mixed-doubles draw. Invitations are sent based on conference affiliation, with each conference having the opportunity to send its top returning player. Mixed doubles are paired based on conference affiliation and at-large selections.Â
This marks the second consecutive year that Derkas has been selected to represent the Mountain West on the men's side of the Oracle ITA Masters.
The men's and women's singles champions will earn automatic entry into the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships scheduled for Nov. 6-10 in Newport Beach, Calif.
Derkas is slated to face Corrado Summaria of Pepperdine in the round of 32 on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. PT. Summaria was named to the All-WCC Second Team last season, after posting a 9-6 record at the top four positions for the Waves.
Derkas will team up with fellow Bulldog Shir Azran in the mixed doubles draw. Shir was an All-MW Singles Team selection, and the only player in the Mountain West since Fresno State joined the league (2012-13) to win at all six singles positions. She grabbed a total of 13 singles wins in dual play and recorded an 8-5 doubles record.
The Fresno State duo will face Olivier Stuart (Mercer) and Katarina Kozarov in the round of 32 on Thurday at 8 a.m. PT. Stuart and Kozarov were both the player of the year in their respective conferences.
