'Dogs split first day of Rainbow Invite

HONOLULU, Hawai'i - The Fresno State water polo team opened its 2020 season at the Rainbow Invite on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs split two games on the first day falling to No. 6 Hawai'i, 15-5 and defeating No. 22 Marist College, 9-5.

"We split our games on the first day of our season, getting the first win of the season, and some great lessons in the second game," stated head coach Natalie Benson. "I am happy that we are in a situation where we can get into specific tactical details and personnel so early in our season, and were provided with competition that allows us to work on the holes we need to fill in training. Looking forward to our exhibition tomorrow, where we can get some minutes for all, and play with some different line ups."

vs. No. 22 Marist College - Fresno State won the sprint to start the game. Claire Shade scored the first goal of the 2020 season right out of the gate to give Fresno State a 1-0 lead. Shade scored again two minutes into the first quarter extending the lead 2-0. Emily Nicholson found the back of the net at 4:20 to put the 'Dogs up 3-0. Cynthia Rosa scored on a power play at 2:29 left in the first quarter to make it a 4-0 run for Fresno state. Marist scored its first goal to end the quarter.Â

The Red Foxes opened the second quarter with a goal, but Daphne Guevremont answered back with a penalty shot to give Fresno State a 5-2 lead. Back-to-back saves by Madelynn Garcia would close out the second quarter.

The Bulldogs continued its offensive dominance in the third quarter with a goal from Guevremont to expand their lead to 6-2. Nicholson and Callie Woodruff would scored two more goals, but the Red Foxes responded with a goal of their own in the last second to complete the quarter. Fresno State went into the last 8 minutes with an 8-3 lead.

Marist won the sprint to start the fourth quarter. The Red Foxes scored two goals early in the quarter. Yesenia Preciado scored one last goal with 0:06 left in the game to round out scoring for the 'Dogs. The Bulldogs took the win 9-5.

Madelynn Garcia and Kate Watley split time in goal for Fresno State. They combined for seven saves on the night.

vs. No. 6 Hawai'i -Â Hawai'i opened up the game with back-to-back goals to put them up 2-0. Emily Diacono put the 'Dogs on the scoreboard to put them in a one-goal game with 4:19 left in the first quarter. Paula Nieto Jasny recorded back-to-back saves for the 'Dogs. Hawai'i went on a 3-0 run to take a 5-1 lead at the end of the quarter.

The teams exchanged goals to start the second quarter. Hawai'i would score two more goals taking an 8-2 lead into halftime.Â
Garcia subbed in for the Bulldogs to kick off the third quarter. Hawai'i is quick to score but Guevremont responded with a goal off of a power play with 6:47 left in the third quarter. Hawai'i would score two more goals before Nicholson would find the back of the net with her second goal of the night. Hawai'i would score another goal to take a 12-4 lead into the fourth quarter.Â
Hawai'i won the sprint in the fourth quarter and struck first to take a 13-4 lead with 6:50 left in the quarter. Isabella Sonkoly scored her first goal of the day with 5:22 left in the quarter. Hawaii's offense netted two more goals of its own to finish with a 15-5 win over Fresno State.
Nicholson led the Bulldogs on offense with 2 goals. Garcia and Jasny split time in goal combining for 6 saves on the night.
