No. 14 Fresno State closes Rainbow Invite with exhibition victory

HONOLULU, Hawai'i - The No. 14 Fresno State women's water polo team defeated No. 12 LMU, 8-6 in an exhibition game to close out the second day of the Rainbow Invite at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex, Sunday afternoon.
"Although today's game was an exhibition," head coach Natalie Benson said, "any opportunity to play and earn experience is valuable for our group at this point in the season. We played two solid quarters, but need to keep our focus throughout an entire game if we want to be successful. I'm looking forward to applying lessons learned in the next few weeks."

How it happened - Cynthia Rosa won the sprint to start the game. LMU scored a quick goal, but Emily Diacono countered scoring off of a power play to put Fresno State on the board. LMU was able to draw an exclusion to score off of a power play of its own, to put them up 2-1 with 3:34 left in the first quarter. Megan Greenwood tied the match finding the back of the net off of a pass from Claire Schade to close out the first quarter.Â

Schade opened the second quarter netting a goal with 6:39 left in the quarter taking the lead 3-2. Daphne Guevremont converted a penalty shot with 5:49 left in the quarter extending the lead 4-2. The 'Dogs continued their offensive momentum going on a 3-0 run to take a 7-2 lead into halftime.

The third quarter started out with strong defense from both teams, keeping each other out of the net for the first five minutes. LMU struck first on a penalty shot, but Yesenia Preciado responded with a goal on a power play with 2:28 left in third quarter. Fresno State took an 8-3 lead into the fourth quarter.

LMU won the sprint to start the final quarter and scored first with 7:30 left in the quarter. LMU converted two penalty shots to put them within two goals of Fresno State, making it an 8-6 game. The Lions' defense would hold the Bulldogs scoreless for the final eight minutes. Fresno State would walk away with an 8-6 victory.

Diacono led the Bulldogs on offense with two goals. Madelynn Garcia recorded seven saves in goal.

What's next - Fresno State will travel to compete in the Cal Cup on Jan 25-26.
