Fresno State wraps up first day of Cal Cup

BERKELEY, Calif - The No. 13 Fresno State women's water polo team suffered two losses on the first day of the Cal Cup. The Bulldogs fell to No. 18 San Jose 6-7 and No. 2 Stanford 10-4.

"Started our morning slowly, and didn't put forth our best work," head coach Natalie Benson said. "Went 2-for-11 on 6x5 and we had many chances to finish with natural goals, and were not able to convert. Bounced back in the second game and had a good effort against a strong counter attack team. Made some strides forward in the second match."

vs San Jose State - It was a close start to begin the first quarter with the Spartans and Bulldogs exchanging goals. San Jose State would take the lead halfway through the first quarter to put the Spartans up 2-1. The Spartan's would take that lead into the second quarter.

Fresno State struck first to open up the second quarter tying the game 2-2. The Spartans would tack on two more goals at the end of the quarter to take the lead 4-2.Â

Coming out of halftime, the Spartans scored within the first minute extending the lead 5-2. San Jose would pull off another goal before the 'Dogs would fire back going on a 3-0 run to make it a one-goal game. The Spartans closed out the third quarter with a goal to put them up 7-5 to go into the final quarter.

Fresno State would be the only team to score in the final quarter to conclude the game. The Spartans took the win 7-6.

vs Stanford - Stanford opened the game winning the first quarter sprint. Stanford took a 2-0 lead scoring back-to-back goals on power plays. Sienna Jagielski immediately fired back finding the back of the net to put Fresno State on the board. Stanford capitalized on a penalty shot with 1:25 left in the first quarter to extend their lead 3-1. Stanford would score one more goal before the end of the quarter creating a 4-1 lead.Â

Stanford scores within the opening two minutes of the second quarter to continue their lead to put them up 5-1. Both defenses keep each other out of the goal until Stanford strikes with 0:33 seconds left in the quarter to put them up 6-1. The 'Dogs will convert on a power play with 0:04 seconds left on the clock. Paula Nieto Jasny will make a save to take the Bulldogs into halftime.

Madelynn Garcia will start in the goal to begin the third quarter. Stanford struck first in the quarter to score off of a power play with 5:29 left in the quarter to put the Cardinals up 7-2. A save by Garcia leads Megan Greenwood to score her first goal of the game. Stanford pulled off two more goals to close out the third quarter leading 9-3.

Daphne Guevremont halted Stanford's run scoring with 3:38 left in the fourth quarter to put Fresno State at 4-9. Fresno State took a timeout with 1:55 left on the clock but were not able to get a shot off. Sanford would score one last goal to finish out the game with a 10-4 win.

Jagielski scored a team high of two goals. Jasny and Garcia split time in the goal, the duo grabbing 5 combined saves.
