‘Dogs close out Cal Cup

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Fresno State women's water polo team went 1-1 to close out the 2020 Cal Cup. The 'Dogs faced two Top 12 teams on Sunday at the Legends Aquatic Center.
The No. 13 Bulldogs defeated No. 12 UC Davis 14-13 and fell to No. 3 UC Irvine 14-8.
"We made some great strides this weekend," said head coach Natalie Benson, "winning a tough battle against UC Davis. It's always beneficial to get high-level opportunities to grow both defensively, and through how we control our offensive possessions. I'm proud of some of the mental and emotional obstacles we were able to overcome, and I'm excited to see what we can do in training to prepare for the remainder of the season."
vs UC Davis - Daphne Guevremont scored the first goal of the game, converting a penalty shot to put the 'Dogs up 1-0. Madelynn Garcia forced a turnover and grabbed a steal that led to a goal by Sienna Jagielski. Both teams would exchange goals in the last minute to finish the first quarter with Fresno State taking a 3-2 lead.
Emily Diacono and Claire Schade would both net their first goal of the game to put the 'Dogs up 5-2 with 5:56 left in the second quarter. The Aggies tabbed two goals, but the Bulldogs responded back with two goals of their own. UC Davis was able to snatch one more goal to go into halftime with Fresno State up 7-5.
The Aggies doubled their goals in the third quarter. The Bulldogs pulled off three goals scored by Diacono, Yesenia Preciado, and Cynthia Rosa to end the quarter tied 10-10.
The Bulldogs continued their strong offensive attacks in the fourth quarter outscoring the Aggies 4-3. The 'Dogs came away with a 14-13 victory over the Aggies.
Preciado led the 'Dogs on offense, scoring with three goals. Garcia was in the goal for the 'Dogs, she grabbed a total of nine saves.
vs UC Irvine - Fresno State won the sprint to start the game. Paula Nieto Jasny grabbed a save and Diacono took the ball the other way to score the first goal of the game. Guevremont extended the Bulldogs lead, capitalizing on a power play to put the 'Dogs up 2-0 with 5:43 left in the quarter. The Anteaters notched back-to-back goals to cut the lead. Both teams would exchange two more goals to head into the second quarter in a tie game, 4-4.
UC Irvine struck first to start the third quarter, but Emily Nicholson netted a goal to keep the game even. The Anteaters continued the high scoring quarter going on a 3-0 run. Nicholson and Woodruff snagged back-to-back goals to keep it a close game, ending the first half with the 'Dogs down 7-8.
The Anteaters kept the Bulldogs out of the net for the entirety of the third quarter. UC Irvine tabbed three goals, taking an 11-7 lead into the final quarter.
UC Irvine tacked on the first goal of the fourth quarter to which Preciado responded with a goal, making it a 12-8 game with 6:55 left in regulation. The Anteaters would tally on two more goals to take the win 14-8.
Diacono and Nicholson led Fresno State with two goals apiece. Jasny was in the goal for the Bulldogs, she logged five saves.
