‘Dogs finish UCLA Mini Invite

LOS ANGELES - The Fresno State water polo team closed the 2020 UCLA Mini Invite with two losses to Top 5 teams, Sunday afternoon at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center. The No. 12 Bulldogs fell to No. 3 UCLA 16-10 and No. 5 UC Irvine 15-11.
"We continue to play competitive teams in order to prepare ourselves for conference competition," head coach Natalie Benson said. "Having the opportunity to build our resilience and see how we can adapt throughout tough games will pay huge dividends for us later in season."
Fresno State falls to 2-5 on the season.
vs. UCLA - UCLA won the sprint to start the game. Both teams exchanged turnovers, but UCLA capitalized and struck first to take a 1-0 lead with 6:06 left in the quarter. Emily Nicholson converted a power play with an assist from Daphne Guevremont to tie the game 1-1. UCLA responded with a 3-0 run to put the Bruins up 4-1 with 2:07 left in the first quarter. Fresno State tabbed one more goal in the quarter to head into the second down 4-2.
UCLA netted back-to-back penalty shots to start the second quarter. A steal by Maddie Loggins led to Guevremont scoring on a penalty shot, making it a one-goal game. UCLA went on its second 3-0 run of the game to extend the Bruins' lead 8-4. Nicholson found the back of the net off of an assist from Cynthia Rosa, but UCLA would take an 8-5 lead into halftime.
Paula Nieto Jasny subbed in for Madelynn Garcia in the goal to begin the second half. UCLA scored first, but Emily Nicholson rallied with her fourth goal of the game to keep it close. Emily Diacono scored her first goal of the game off an assist from Isabella Sonkoly to make it a two-goal game with the 'Dogs down 9-7. UCLA tallied two more goals at the end of the third quarter, taking an 11-7 lead into the final quarter.
UCLA pulled out its third 3-0 run of the game to take a 14-7 lead with 5:09 left in the game. Rosa put a halt to the Bruins' run scoring a penalty shot. UCLA responded with back-to-back goals, both on power plays, to broaden its lead. The Bulldogs scored back-to-back goals of their own, but it wouldn't be enough to complete the comeback. UCLA took the win 16-10.
Nicholson led the 'Dogs in scoring, with four goals on five shots. Garcia and Nieto Jasny split time in the goa, the duo tallied a total of three saves.
vs. UC Irvine - The Anteaters quickly netted two goals to take a 2-0 lead with 5:19 left in the first quarter. Schade put the Bulldogs on the board, scoring a goal off a pass from Rosa. UC Irvine tacked on another goal on a power play to keep the lead (3-1) with 3:24 left in the quarter. Both teams scored in the last minute of the quarter. UC Irvine finished the first quarter with a 4-2 lead.
Woodruff got the offense going in the second quarter to put the 'Dogs within one goal of the Anteaters. UC Irvine would tack on two unanswered goals to take a 6-3 lead into halftime.
Rosa won the sprint to give the Bulldogs possession to start the third quarter. Both teams had an offensive spark in the beginning of the quarter scoring two goals apiece. Woodruff and Rosa scored back-to-back goals, making it a one-goal game. The Anteaters scored two more goals to head into the final quarter with a 10-7 lead.
Fresno State won the sprint and scored within the first 15 second to start the final quarter. The Anteaters found an offensive rhythm and went on a 5-0 run to broaden their lead to 15-9 with 3:23 left in the game. The Bulldogs fought hard scoring two more goals before the end of regulation, but fell to the Anteaters 15-11.
Schade led the Bulldogs in scoring with three goals. Nieto Jasny and Garcia split time in the goal for the Bulldogs, grabbing a combined six saves
