Creighton will coach the tight ends; Brown will coach the Huskies, and serve as the Bulldogs' recruiting coordinator.
A glance at: Julius Brown – Huskies/Recruiting Coordinator
Brown spent one season at Texas Tech prior to accepting the position at Fresno State on Friday. Brown coached the Red Raiders' cornerbacks under Matt Wells and was with Wells in a similar role for three seasons at Utah State before the two left together for the Big 12.
In addition to his Utah State tenure, Brown's ties to the Mountain West are even deeper having played, gradated and coached at Boise State. The Stockton, Calif. native was a three-year starter as a cornerback and earned honorable mention All-WAC honors his senior year in 2003 after leading the conference in passes defended. He and Bulldogs' running backs coach Lee Marks played on a few of the same Bronco teams in the early 2000's.
Last season, Brown was a part of a defensive staff that helped the Red Raiders limit opponents to 30.3 points per game, the lowest average by a Texas Tech defense since 2009.
Details about "Huskies" - The "Husky" position is a product of the 4-2-5 base defense Fresno State will roll out in 2020. The scheme employs a linebacker/safety hybrid position – responsibilities include those of a strong-side linebacker and a safety. The position will resemble a fifth defensive back brought in for nickel packages when running a 4-3 base defense.
"Julius has strong recruiting ties to not only the Valley, but the entire state of California. His ability to build relationships with both recruits and his players is something that stuck out to me. What also excites me is Julius has both played and coached in the Mountain West, so he understands what it takes to win in this league."
A glance at: Paul Creighton – Tight Ends
Creighton will head down the 99 from UC Davis to coach the Bulldog tight ends. Creighton had been with the Aggies for the past six seasons, serving as their tight ends and special teams coordinator, mostly recently. Earlier in his time at UC Davis, he held recruiting coordinator responsibilities.
During his tenure, he coached under Ron Gould for three seasons (2014-16) and then Dan Hawkins (2017-19) for the last three seasons. Gould coached under Jeff Tedford all 11 seasons he was at Cal (2002-12). Creighton played for Hawkins at CU (2006), and a season before Hawkins' arrival, Bulldogs' defensive coordinator William Inge coached for one season at CU while Creighton was a player (2005).
In 2018, UC Davis won its first Big Sky championship and earned its first FCS playoff berth in program history. It was arguably their best season since moving to Division I in 2007, going 10-3 in a season that kicked off with a win over San Jose State.
"Paul's experiences and qualities were a perfect fit for what we needed on our staff. Whether it be recruiting California, his experience as a special teams coordinator, or coaching the tight ends, he's done it all at a very high level. Paul is a great teacher and a great person, and I'm excited to have him join Bulldog Football."
