Fresno State men's tennis fall recap

FRESNO, Calif. -- The Fresno State men's tennis team concluded a successful 2019 fall season. The senior-heavy Bulldogs were led by Zdenek Derkas, who garnered multiple high-place finishes in tournament play.Â
With several different players gaining experience along with wins, the team is set for a solid spring outing.Â
Gamecock Fall Invitational
As the first tournament for the Bulldogs, Fresno State was represented by seniors Derkas and Angus Bradshaw.
Singles -Â Derkas shined in the tournament, tallying two wins along with a semi-finals appearance. Bradshaw shared success as well, winning in the opening round but falling shortly after in the quarterfinals.Â
Doubles -Â The two Bulldogs teamed up in doubles play. The pair made a run that ended in the quarterfinals, but picked up a win in consolation play.Â
UC Davis Invitational
The second tournament of the fall featured freshman Daniel Baturyn competing in his Bulldog debut along with senior Bailey Gong.Â
Singles - Baturyn was defeated in his first tournament match, but made up for the early loss by winning his consolation match along with two extra matches. Gong's tournament was similar, losing his first match but winning a consolation match to finish strong.
Doubles -Â The freshman-senior duo paired up for a doubles match in the tournament as well. The pair shared the same success as they had in singles play, losing in the opening round but winning their consolation match.Â
Bulldog Classic
Fresno State's very own Bulldog Classic tournament proved to be the most successful outing for the squad. The tournament showcased the freshmen-senior tandem of Baturyn and Gong again, with both finishing in the top-3 in their respective draws.Â
Singles -Â Baturyn highlighted the tournament, competing in the "White Flight" division. The freshman won three straight matches to propel himself to a finals appearance. Despite losing the match, Baturyn placed second in his second-ever collegiate tournament appearance.Â
Gong won his opening match before losing in the quarterfinals. After several consolation wins, the senior managed to place third in the home tournament.Â
Doubles -Â Besides having success in singles play, the Baturyn-Gong duo lost in the first round of doubles play and did not compete in any consolation matches.
ITA Oracle Masters
As the Bulldog Classic was under way in Fresno, senior Zdenek Derkas represented both the Bulldogs and Mountain West at the ITA Oracle Masters.Â
Singles -Â The Fresno State senior lost in the first round in the masters but won his next two consolation matches.Â
Doubles -Â After losing his final consolation match, Derkas joined a partner to compete in doubles play. The pair would lose in the first round, ending their doubles tournament chances.Â
UC Santa Barbara Fall InvitationalÂ
The UC Santa Barbara Fall Invitational featured the Bulldogs competing in the "B" bracket of the tournament.Â
Singles -Â Baturyn had the most success tournament of the three, winning his opening match to get to the quarterfinals before losing. He then won a consolation match to put him into a fifth place match.Â
Freshman Johannes Seeman won his first-round matchup as well, making it to the quarterfinals where he fell to junior Charles Roberts of Oregon.Â
Doubles -Â The Bulldog's doubles play proved to be more successful in comparison to singles.Â
Fresno State's duo of Baturyn and Seeman used their team-built chemistry to propel themselves to a final appearance, where they would fall 8-5.Â
ITA RegionalsÂ
The Fresno State squad had two representatives at the ITA Regionals in Bradshaw and Seeman.Â
Singles -Â Bradshaw lost early, dropping his opening game in the round of 128 as well as a later consolation match.Â
Seeman also lost his opening match in the round of 128, but won his consolation game to make up for the loss.Â
Doubles -Â Both players teamed up for doubles play that flashed some success. The pair won their first match in the round of 32 before losing in the quarterfinals.
What's NextÂ
After a busy fall tournament season that showcased multiple high-place tournament finishes from both freshmen and seniors, the Bulldogs are set to begin their spring campaign with a Jan. 18Â road matchup against the University of San Diego.
