DAVIS, Calif. - The No. 12-ranked Fresno State women's water polo team capped the Aggie Classic with a 12-10 win over No. 14 UC Davis on Sunday morning at the Schaal Aquatics Center.
Â
Daphne Guevremont scored a game-high four goals on seven shots along with two assists and two steals to lead Fresno State. Paula Nieto Jasny had a strong performance in goal yet again with nine saves along with two steals.
Â
"It was another tough, four-quarter battle," said head coach Natalie Benson. "I'm happy with the team's resolve and focus when the stakes were high, and that we continue to learn and grow throughout each competition."
How it happened
UC Davis opened the scoring one minute, 38 seconds into the first quarter after a Jasny block and shot off the rebound. The Aggies capitalized on a power play to tack on another goal with 5:17 left in the first quarter to take a 2-0 lead. Fresno State cut the lead in half after Sienna Jagielski swiped a steal from the Aggies that resulted in Callie Woodruff capitalizing with the goal. Emily Nicholson drew a penalty foul that led to a converted penalty shot by Kaitlin Howarth to tie the game 2-2. Woodruff netted her second goal of the game with 2:03 left in the first quarter, but the Aggies tallied one more goal to tie the game 3-3 to end the first quarter.
Nicholson and Guevremont scored a goal apiece to start the second quarter to put the Bulldogs up 5-3. The Aggies found the back of the net with 1:23 left in the quarter to make it a one-goal game going into the half, 5-4.
Â
Guevremont struck first in the third quarter, netting a goal off an assist from Cynthia Rosa to increase the Bulldogs' lead to 6-4. The Aggies scored back-to-back goals to tie the game, but Guevremont fired back with her third goal of the game at the 5:09 mark in the third quarter to put the 'Dogs back on top, 7-6. The back-and-forth continued as UC Davis scored to tie the game 7-7, but Maddie Loggins and Sydney Coachman answered with one goal each to finish out the third quarter to build the Bulldogs lead to 9-7 after three quarters.
